Kevin Durant’s future with the Phoenix Suns has been in the air for a while now, and it seems to be a never-ending saga. The two-time NBA champ moved to Arizona in 2023 after a disappointing stint with the Brooklyn Nets.
Even with Durant on the roster and a superstar like Devin Booker, the Suns only managed to reach the Western Conference Semifinals in 2023 and fell in the first round in 2024. It seemed like a deep postseason run was out of reach, and then they missed out on the playoffs entirely in 2025.
Recent reports claim that both parties have come to terms with the fact that the partnership has not lived up to its hype. There have been rumblings that the Suns are trying to find a suitable deal to let go of Durant, and NBA insider Shams Charania dropped a crucial update on the situation.
Shams Charania Reports Kevin Durant Wants No Part of the Timberwolves
During a recent appearance on SportsCenter, Charania spoke about which teams the Suns are actively holding trade talks with.
“I’m told the Phoenix Suns remain in active conversations around the league on a Kevin Durant deal, but their focus over the last several days has been on three teams, and that’s the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.”
“I’m told Kevin Durant has no desire to be in Minnesota with the Timberwolves”😬😬😬

Speaking about the teams Durant is interested in, Charania said, “We know his preferred destinations, though, are the Rockets, Spurs, and the Heat. And so the Suns have been working with Durant’s business partner, Rich Kleiman, on just figuring out exactly where he could end up.”
Moreover, Charania also claims that Durant has no intention to move to Minnesota. “I’m told Durant has no desire to be in Minnesota with the Timberwolves. So, how does that shape how the Minnesota Timberwolves and other teams that could have interest, that are outside his preferred list, decide how to move forward with these Durant discussions?”

It makes things tricky for the Suns, as they will now have to agree to a deal with one of the three teams that Durant prefers: the Rockets, the Spurs, or the Heat. As the ESPN insider says, the Suns forward’s contract does pose a problem.
At his age, an expiring contract can be tricky to acquire in a trade and a risky move to pursue. It will be interesting to see which teams pursue Durant and what Phoenix will get in return.
