On Wednesday, the NBA finally completed its investigation of the Los Angeles Clippers and whether they circumvented the salary cap with the Kawhi Leonard-Aspiration scandal. The Clippers will lose five first-round picks and face a $30 million fine, plus owner Steve Ballmer and executives Lawrence Frank and Gillian Zucker have been suspended.
Leonard will have to pay $700,000 in restitution and will not be suspended or have his contract voided. He responded with an apology that got the NBA world talking.

“Integrity and respect for this game are fundamental to who I am,” Leonard wrote. “I accept full responsibility for lapses in judgment by people within my inner circle and regret the distraction this situation has caused the fans and my family. I entered into my contract with the Clippers as well as the agreements in question in good faith, fully committed to fulfilling my obligations and with no knowledge of any intent on anyone’s part to circumvent the salary cap.
“For 15 years, my priority has been giving everything to my family, the game, and those I share the court with. As I return to Toronto, I am focused on what I can control, closing this chapter, and moving forward with a clean slate.”
NBA fans quickly called out Leonard’s statement for several different reasons.

Another user called out Leonard’s wording.
“‘lapses’ in judgment. come on man,” one user wrote. “here are millions of dollars for a side hustle that you dont have to do anything for. k, bro. you know exactly what you were doing. f this wacky mf-er.”
Another user expressed a similar sentiment in their post: “Full responsibility then blame others in the same sentence.”
“Message from a PR firm,” another commented. “He’s only upset he got caught.”
Leonard’s statement seemingly absolved him of any and all blame, and fans noticed this in their replies.
One individual even gave credit to Pablo Torre over his investigation into this situation.
“Lmao he’s lying but nice try,” they wrote. “Uncle Dennis was asking every team in 2019 for violating [expletive] perks and KL2 LLCs definitely show he was well aware of what was happening. Pablo cooked so tough on this it’s genuinely amazing.”
Leonard’s uncle, Dennis Robertson, who no longer represents Leonard, received a five-year ban “from conducting business or otherwise engaging with NBA teams and their affiliates on behalf of or with respect to any player, employee, or other league or team personnel.”
A number of fans called out Robertson, as one wrote: “Throwing uncle Dennis under the bus … like a MFER HAHAHA.”
This alleged cap circumvention involved Leonard signing an endorsement deal with a company focused on planting trees. That was called out by another user. “No trees planted and paid more than all the other celebs and this dude blames his inner circle,” they wrote.

Leonard’s trade to the Toronto Raptors is now expected to be finalized, and he is looking forward to a fresh start with the organization that he led to an NBA championship in 2019.
Judging by these replies, Leonard might have to work to rebuild his reputation with fans.
