The year-long Kawhi Leonard-Aspiration scandal has finally come to an end, with the NBA announcing major punishments for the Los Angeles Clippers, owner Steve Ballmer, and Leonard. The investigation found that the Clippers had improperly initiated and facilitated off-court endorsement deals between Leonard and four companies doing business with the team, including Aspiration.
As a result, the Clippers have been stripped of five first-round picks, the organization has been fined $30 million, Leonard will have to pay $700,000 in restitution, and Ballmer, Lawrence Frank, and Gillian Zucker have been suspended. After the news broke, NBA commissioner Adam Silver issued a stern statement calling out Ballmer and his franchise.

Silver’s statement explained the severity of the punishment, while also sending a stern message about Ballmer and the Clippers’ conduct.
“The NBA’s collectively bargained system for determining player compensation is a fundamental component of the basketball competition that the league oversees for the benefit of the teams and players and ultimately the fans,” Silver said in the statement.
“I am deeply disappointed by the flagrant violations of our rules and by the Clippers’ institutional and leadership failures that led to this misconduct. The severity of the penalties reflects the seriousness of the violations.”

The saga began in September 2025, when investigative reporter Pablo Torre reported that Leonard had secretly signed a $28 million “no-show” endorsement deal with Aspiration in 2022. The NBA then hired an outside law firm to conduct a year-long investigation. While Leonard has to pay restitution, the fact that he avoided a suspension or his contract being voided is a win for the star forward.
The suspensions for Ballmer, Frank, and Zucker are likely a result of the “institutional and leadership failures” that Silver mentioned. Frank, the Clippers’ president of basketball operations, has been suspended without pay for six months. Zucker, the team’s president of business operations, has been suspended without pay for one year. Dennis Robertson, Leonard’s uncle who previously represented him, was banned from any NBA activities for five years.
Leonard dodged a bullet, as the Clippers’ punishment is far worse than his individual penalty. The 35-year-old star released a statement after the news broke, accepting full responsibility and expressing excitement for his “clean slate” with the Toronto Raptors. With this scandal behind him, his trade to the Raptors can be finalized.
“Integrity and respect for this game are fundamental to who I am. I accept full responsibility for lapses in judgment by people within my inner circle and regret the distraction this situation has caused the fans and my family,” Leonard said.
“I entered into my contract with the Clippers as well as the agreements in question in good faith, fully committed to fulfilling my obligations and with no knowledge of any intent on anyone’s part to circumvent the salary cap.
“For 15 years, my priority has been giving everything to my family, the game, and those I share the court with. As I return to Toronto, I am focused on what I can control, closing this chapter, and moving forward with a clean slate.”
Meanwhile, it’s safe to say the Clippers will feel the effects of the punishment for years to come.
