For the first time in several years, the Boston Celtics are not considered one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference heading into the season. The team’s passionate fan base will look to help them overachieve this year. One of the Celtics’ biggest supporters is movie star Marl Wahlberg, who made a special appearance at the team’s recent home game.

Wahlberg was shown filming scenes at halftime of the Celtics’ recent preseason game against the Cleveland Cavaliers for his upcoming movie Weekend Warriors. The plot follows a father taking his autistic son across the country to visit every NBA team so he can figure out his favorite team.
The movie is inspired by the international film Weekend Rebels, which chronicles a similar father/son bonding experience as they visit every soccer team in Germany from the first division through the third division. Both films are based on the autobiography Wir Wochenendrebellen by Micro and Jason von Juterczenka.
While the actual release date for the film hasn’t been revealed, LeBron James is notably listed as one of the film’s producers through his company Spring Hill Productions.
A Boston native, Wahlberg is one of the city’s most famous sports fans. He named Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett as his all-time favorite Celtics. He’s a constant presence at Celtics’ home games and even shared a special moment with the team during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic.
Then team President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge invited Wahlberg to chat with and motivate the team on a zoom call. Wahlberg enjoyed the experience and shared memorable stories from his entertainment career.
Wahlberg’s fandom may face a rough spot this season, as preseason projections for the Celtics vary widely due to All-NBA wing Jayson Tatum likely missing most, if not all, of the season after rupturing his right Achilles tendon. The team also traded guard Jrue Holiday and forward Kristaps Porzingis for financial reasons.
The Celtics are still expected to make the playoffs, but aren’t considered genuine title contenders unless guard Jaylen Brown has an MVP-caliber season and point guard Derrick White makes his first All-Star team. Head coach Joe Mazzulla will also aim to help players such as center Neemias Queta, wing Baylor Scheierman, and guard Hugo Gonzalez develop.

While there is less optimism around the Celtics than there’s been in over a decade, expect Wahlberg to be courtside, cheering on the team as usual.
