The Kansas City Chiefs made one of the offseason’s most notable depth moves Monday when they acquired quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
The deal gives Kansas City an experienced insurance option behind Patrick Mahomes as the organization prepares for the star quarterback’s return from injury. For a team that has consistently prioritized stability during its championship window, adding a former starter with high-level athletic traits offered a low-cost way to reinforce the depth chart.
Why Mina Kimes Sees Justin Fields’ Chiefs Role as a Sam Darnold Style Reset
The move has drawn attention across the league, including from ESPN analyst Mina Kimes, who compared Fields’ situation to the path Sam Darnold followed during his stint with the San Francisco 49ers. Appearing on NFL Live, Kimes said the structure of the deal and Fields’ experience make the move particularly appealing for both sides.
“I think it makes a ton of sense,” Kimes said. “This is a low-risk signing. They gave up a sixth-round pick. They’re paying him, I believe, $3 million, because the Jets are eating some of his salary.
“That’s not just backup money, that’s cheap backup money. And he is a qualified backup, one of the more qualified, experienced backups around now, given his starting experience. If he does have to play, let’s say there’s some complications with [Mahomes’] injury, he does bring that experience.”
“This is an opportunity for him… to pursue the Sam Darnold path.”

Fields arrives after posting a PFSN QB Impact Score of 69.1 in 2025, ranking No. 33 among quarterbacks. While his production fluctuated in New York, he now joins an offense that finished with a PFSN Offense Impact Score of 74.3, placing No. 17 in the league despite injuries and inconsistency throughout the season.
The Chiefs’ system under Andy Reid has long been viewed as one of the league’s most quarterback-friendly environments, a factor Kimes believes can help Fields reset his career.
“For Fields, this is also an opportunity for him to pursue the Sam Darnold path,” Kimes added. “When I think about Darnold, yes, we think about Minnesota, but to me, the year he spent in San Francisco before he got to the Vikings, that is what Justin Fields can look at this as.”
Kimes also said that Kansas City offers a rare developmental opportunity. “This is an opportunity for him to not only learn under the best in Andy Reid, but also rebuild his value as a quarterback. I love it for both sides.”

Fields will not be asked to compete for the starting job, but his mobility and improvisational ability align with the style Kansas City has embraced during the Mahomes era. His presence gives the Chiefs a backup capable of running a similar version of the offense if needed
For Kansas City, the move represents a calculated investment in depth as the team looks to maintain its championship trajectory. For Fields, it is a chance to rebuild his value in a stable environment while learning behind one of the league’s premier quarterbacks.
