The scandal involving NFL insider Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has transcended sports, as it has captivated the minds of the public and dominated headlines even during the 2026 NFL Draft.
Their alleged romantic involvement prompted Russini’s resignation from The Athletic, and Vrabel missed Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft to spend time with his family.
Mike Florio Bashes Mike Vrabel for ‘Strange’ Behavior Amid Dianna Russini Scandal
While Vrabel told the media that he wouldn’t be at the Patriots’ facility for Day 3 of the draft in order to attend counseling, the New York Post’s Page Six released new photos that showed the Patriots head coach at an airport in Salt Lake City, where he appeared to be buying his wife an apology gift.
NBC’s Mike Florio believes the pictures raise many new questions about the situation in just the latest example of how this scandal seems to evolve on a daily basis as new information becomes available.
“I know the Patriots would love nothing more than to turn the page,” Florio said. “It’s their own fault for how they mishandled this from the get-go. It continues to be a story because it has been one PR debacle after another. But he’s back now, and there are still questions. I don’t think this idea of skipping the third day of the draft to attend counseling ever flew with anyone.”
Vagueness around the scandal has fueled online speculation from the beginning, and the latest headline about Vrabel in Salt Lake City isn’t helping his case, despite the gift-buying narrative.
“And when you throw in the fact that the New York Post now has photos of Mike Vrabel in Salt Lake City Airport on Saturday, when was the counseling?” Florio said. “Where was the counseling? What was really going on here? And I don’t want to go too far down speculation lane, but there are constantly new developments, and it seems like every new development raises more questions and makes a strange situation seem even stranger.”
Fans and commentators have been especially harsh on Russini for her past conduct, as plenty of clips of her disparaging her husband have surfaced, along with some bombshells that reveal the extent of her dynamic with Vrabel.
“Russini just appears to be a crazy person,” former NFL player Emmanuel Acho said. “She has a child named Mike, strike No. 1. She had a playlist that was created, apparently, off of this four-game losing streak that she sent to Mike… Married people cheat… She named a child after [the man she had an alleged affair with].”
This scandal doesn’t show any signs of slowing down anytime soon, especially as new information continues to surface. The 2026 NFL regular season is months away, so it will be a while until there’s actual football to distract from the noise as well.
Patriots Players Show Support for Vrabel
Despite the noise surrounding the situation, the Patriots’ players remain fully supportive of their head coach.
“We’re here for Coach, we love Coach,” Drake Maye said about Vrabel. “What he does for us, what he’s done for us this past year, you can’t speak into words. Thankful he’s our head coach. Know he’s dealing with some off the field and out of the coaching world, but we’re here for him, and I know he’s gonna come back.”
Apart from the star quarterback, two veterans, Hunter Henry and Robert Spillane, were also asked about Vrabel.
“I thought he did a great job. It’s been the same Vrabes, bringing a lot of that energy in the room. Obviously, he addressed it, and that’s kind of all I’ll say about it,” Henry said.
“Coach coaches football. He keeps the main thing the main thing. So I know he’s dealing with personal issues, but when we’re in the building, we speak football,” Spillane said. “I love coach, and I’m going to be there to support him as he would be there to support me through everything. I’m just a player, and I’m trying to do that as best I can.”
Vrabel has addressed the media twice since the scandal broke, acknowledging that he’s had “difficult” yet “positive and productive” conversations with his family and team.
