Mike Tomlin Addresses Steelers for First Time Since Stepping Down

Tomlin is undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches in the storied history of the Steelers franchise. In addition to never turning in a losing season in nearly two decades in his role, he also won a Super Bowl and two AFC Championships. He was also a first-time head coach when Pittsburgh hired him, making his remarkable run even more impressive.

His decision to step down shocked many around the league and left some wondering where he stood, as he had declined to officially address the media since making the announcement. This changed recently when he spoke about his time with the team during an awards acceptance speech.

“It’s often said we’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time, like you have to choose. I think our experience here in Pittsburgh and with the great Steelers organization exemplifies that. We were here for a long and really good time … It’s been an honor to serve the greatest organization in sports … We certainly don’t do it for [recognition]. We’ve been extremely blessed … Thank you,” Tomlin said.

The Steelers took a major gamble on Tomlin, hiring him with no prior head-coaching experience. He also had spent only one year as a defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings, with the rest of his NFL career coming as a defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

His success as a defensive coach played a role in his storied run in Pittsburgh, including the team finishing among the top half of the league in PFSN’s Impact Rankings in each of his last 11 seasons as head coach. Defense has always been an identity for this franchise, and he carried on the tradition.

The Steelers went in a different direction to replace him, going with Mike McCarthy, a head coach with an offensive background. It will be interesting to see how this change plays out for them, but they hope it will help end their playoff drought. They haven’t won a playoff game since the 2016 season, despite making six postseason appearances since then.
