The NFL Hall of Fame continues to receive criticism after its decision to leave Bill Belichick off the list of those elected to join the select group of honorees in his first year of eligibility. Despite his historic success with the New England Patriots, the legendary coach did not receive 40 out of 50 votes needed in his first year.
The results of this year’s finalists’ vote will be announced at the NFL Honors ceremony on Thursday, but the main topic surrounding the event remains Belichick’s absence, and Mike Florio made a point of expressing his outrage.
Mike Florio Speaks Out After Bill Belichick Was Snubbed by the Hall of Fame
Questioned by PFSN’s Ian Cummings on Day 2 of “Super Bowl Radio Row”, Florio said Belichick’s absence is a “major embarrassment for the Hall of Fame,” a decision that undermines the credibility of the select list that should honor the league’s most historic names.
Florio also issued a warning to Roger Goodell, who sits on the board of directors that makes the Hall of Fame selections, even suggesting that the selection process should be overseen by an independent committee.

Question: Going off the Hall of Fame discussion from earlier, you’ve covered the NFL for 20 years. Is this the most dysfunctional the Hall of Fame committee has been?
Florio: Absolutely, I mean, this is unbelievable. It’s a major embarrassment for the Hall of Fame. It undermines the integrity of the Hall of Fame and, by extension, the NFL. I know Roger Goodell yesterday tried to step away from that and say that the NFL doesn’t control the Hall of Fame. Well, look at the board of directors, Roger Goodell is on it, multiple owners are on the board of directors.”
“There’s a national advisory board, Roger Goodell is on it. So they can say we don’t control, and maybe that’s true, but they can control if they want to. They’re in the position to control the Hall of Fame. And maybe the message coming out of this is somebody from 345 Park Avenue had better control the Hall of Fame.”
It is worth noting that some of the 50 jurors base their decisions on the length of time candidates have been waiting, assuming that all finalists are deserving and fearing that those who have been waiting for decades will be forgotten if they are not approved immediately.
Even though this stance was not unprecedented, it is noteworthy that this was the result for the Class of 2026, the first after the rule change that aimed to “preserve the elite” of the Hall of Fame. To Belichick’s detriment, former players Roger Craig, Ken Anderson, and L.C. Greenwood were chosen.
As mentioned in an article by PFSN’s Scott Long, even in his final season in 2023, when the Patriots struggled as a team due to poor offensive play, Belichick’s defense remained among the best in the NFL, ranking No. 10 in PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric, which is proof of Belichick’s long-term competence.
