Steve Young Pushes Back on Bill Belichick’s Hall-of-Fame Snub With Blunt Post-Spygate Career Argument

Steve Young is the latest former NFL star to defend Bill Belichick after his shocking omission from the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026.

Bill Belichick’s omission from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility exploded on social media when it was announced. The eight-time Super Bowl champion is one of, if not the most, decorated coaches in NFL history.

Fans, analysts, and former players have all weighed in on the decision by the committee to omit Belichick in his first year of eligibility.

Steve Young Believes Bill Belichick was Snubbed from the Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young is the latest to share his thoughts on the shocking omission of one of the most recognizable names and faces in the history of the sport.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is the latest to share that it is preposterous for Belichick not to make the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. While many have argued that he is not getting the extra prestige of being a first-ballot selection because of the Spygate scandal, Young pushed back on that idea.

“Bill Belichick had two Hall of Fame careers,” Young said on “The Dan Patrick Show.” “If you think about Spygate as a big mistake, ok put it away and what do you do? Then he goes and wins three more Super Bowls.”

Belichick’s accolades include eight Super Bowl championships (six as a head coach, two as a defensive coordinator), the most playoff victories by a head coach, and three Coach of the Year awards. He is also one of three coaches to win 300 games, trailing only Don Shula and George Halas, and was named Executive of the Year in 2021.

“He makes it on kind of any criteria you can come up with,” Young added. Even in his final season in 2023, when the New England Patriots struggled as a team due to poor offensive play, Belichick’s defense remained among the best in the NFL, ranking No. 10 in PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric (DEFi).

Belichick is not the only Patriots staffer omitted from the ballot; it was revealed Tuesday that Robert Kraft, the Patriots’ owner since 1994, will also not be a member of the Class of 2026.

While there is sentiment both ways on whether he deserved to wait a year to get into the Hall of Fame due to the cheating scandals, most believe Belichick will wait only a year and be elected to the Hall of Fame in his second year on the ballot.

In the meantime, the Class of 2026 is set to be revealed at NFL Honors on Thursday, when the football world will learn who joins football immortality.
