Coming off a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would love to have their top wide receiver, Mike Evans, back. Whether he finishes a game with one reception or seven, Evans is a difference maker when he’s out on the field.
Without him, the Bucs offense tends to struggle. Quarterback Baker Mayfield welcomed WR Chris Godwin back against the reigning Super Bowl Champions, but he’d love to have both Godwin and Evans on the field together.
Looking at Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans’ Injury and Recovery Timeline
Upon the original diagnosis, Evans was projected to miss 2-3 weeks. He once again suffered a hamstring injury, the same injury that has haunted him throughout his career.
Somehow, he’s managed to record 1,000+ receiving yards every single season. Keep in mind, Evans has been in the league since 2014. Over the years, he has become a critical member of the offense. He helped the Bucs win Super Bowl 55, is a two-time All-Pro, and a six-time Pro Bowler. In 2023, he was tied for the most receiving touchdowns in the season.
The Buccaneers, now 3-1, likely could navigate in Seattle without Evans. The Seahawks have played well, and even ESPN Analytics gives them a 53.3% chance to win. Should Evans return a week early, the Bucs’ chances would likely skyrocket. HC Todd Bowles knows the best decision is to play it safe, as the last thing Tampa Bay wants to do is lose their leading receiver for more than just a few games.
If the Bucs were to be without both Irving and Evans in Week 5, they could run into quite a bit of trouble. Even with Godwin back, Irving is such a dominant pass-catcher that his absence would be notable. To make matters even worse, Tampa has to make the cross-country trip to Seattle, one of the hardest places to play.
This Buccaneers offense currently is ranked 22nd in the league, given a C- by PFSN’s Offense Impact. Mayfield, through four games, is 21st in PFSN’s QB Impact with his C grade.
Should everything go according to plan, Evans could be back for their marquee Week 6 showdown with the San Francisco 49ers. If the team decides he needs an extra week of rest, he’ll gain an additional day as the Bucs’ next game is Monday, October 20. It’ll be their second, and final, Monday Night Football game of the year as they head to Detroit to play the Lions.
