Keaton Wagler’s 46 Points Rewrote His NBA Future in One Night

Illinois freshman Keaton Wagler erupted for 46 points against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday to boost his draft stock.

Illinois freshman Keaton Wagler had a career night during the No. 9 Fighting Illini’s 88-82 upset of the No. 12 Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday. Wagler tallied 46 points and four assists, while shooting 76.5% from the floor, 81.8% (9-of-11) from beyond the arc, and 84.6% from the free throw line.

Keaton Wagler’s Eruption Boosts His Draft Stock

Wagler’s eruption against Purdue doubled his most points for Illinois (23 points against Ohio State). The former four-star recruit in the class of 2025 boosted his draft stock to lottery talk level after the performance against a top-five team at the time.

Despite being a relative unknown a few months ago and not being offered by any of the elite college basketball programs, the promising Illinois star has been mock-drafted by ESPN to be picked No. 18 overall by the Miami Heat in the 2026 NBA Draft.

He set further records by scoring the most points by a freshman in Big Ten history, the most points by a Big Ten player versus a top-five opponent, and the most in a Big Ten road game in 47 years.

The Illinois freshman swept several awards, including the National Player of the Week, Lute Olson Award, and Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season. During his postgame news conference, Illinois coach Brad Underwood broke down what makes Wagler such a dangerous player.

“If you guys didn’t get a good read on Keaton Wagler right there, you missed it because that’s just him,” Underwood said. “He just plays. He just hoops. There’s nothing that fazes him. He just wants to make the right basketball play. And tonight it happened to be scoring.”

Wagler’s 46 points set the record for most points by an opposing player (39 points) at Mackey Arena. During his postgame news conference, Purdue coach Matt Painter lavished praise on Wagler’s sensational performance.

“Hats off to him,” Painter said. “(Ohio State’s) Evan Turner came in here one time and played pretty well. That was probably one of the most impressive performances, if not the most impressive performance, we’ve had in Mackey Arena from an opponent.”

Wagler is averaging 17.5 points on 47.7% shooting from the floor and 43.5% shooting from beyond the arc, five rebounds, and four assists for the 17-3 Illinois this season. He will have a national platform to showcase his talent when the Fighting Illini travel to face the undefeated No. 5 Nebraska Cornhuskers on Sunday.
