Ian Rapoport Shares His Thoughts on The Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Scandal

Prior to the scandal, Russini was considered among the most respected NFL reporters and insiders. Recently, another prominent insider, Ian Rapoport, shared his thoughts on the situation during an appearance on the “Between the Tackles” podcast.

“Watching it play out in public has been really sad,” Rapoport said. “I’ve seen this in other walks of life, and in other sorts of celebrities or important people; I’ve never really seen it with people that I know. It’s really different and like not good and sad.”

Celebrity affairs are not uncommon, as tabloids and social media frequently dissect them when they happen. But Rapoport’s point of actually knowing the people shows how unique this situation is. The talk shows discussing this topic on various platforms feature many individuals, both on- and off-camera, who know or have a personal relationship with one or both of Russini and Vrabel.

This is what made this such a tricky situation, and something that was avoided on network television for some time until the evidence kept piling up, and Russini decided to resign from The Athletic.

While it was blowing up on social media right out of the gate, there was a level of respect that made networks uncomfortable discussing the scandal on air, out of respect for both parties. Eventually, it became such a big story that it couldn’t be avoided, particularly during a time of year when, outside of the NFL Draft and the NFL schedule release, there is very little news.

“The media onslaught, and to be honest, I don’t blame the media, I really don’t, because the public thirst is there,” Rapoport added. “They’re not getting people interested; people are already interested, they’re feeding the beast.”

As someone who has been around the business for quite some time, Rapoport understands why the story became so big and knows that it was unavoidable. When people have a thirst for a certain story or topic, the media isn’t going to ignore it; they are going to address what will garner the most views. That’s the nature of the job.

However, on a more human level, he, along with many others who have spoken on the topic, acknowledges how difficult this scandal is and how tough it is on both parties and their families.

“I would not wish anybody on any level to go through anything like everyone involved in this is going through,” Rapoport added.

Russini had long been one of the most respected insiders in sports, from her time at ESPN to her time with the Athletic. What her future holds in sports media remains to be seen, but for now, she will likely lie low and take some time to sort things out with her family.

Meanwhile, Vrabel is still the head coach for the reigning AFC Champions, the New England Patriots. Vrabel and his No. 12-ranked defense in PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric (DEFi) will look to build upon last season’s successful run to the Super Bowl, and hope to get over the hump and hoist the Lombardi Trophy following the 2026 NFL season.

The scandal has died down over the last week or so, with much of the discourse around the NFL centered on Rashee Rice’s latest legal incident and Aaron Rodgers’ return to the Steelers. Time will tell whether this scandal’s time in the sun has officially run dry, or if additional details, photos, or rumors emerge to buoy it back to the top of the news cycle.
