Will Matthew Stafford Retire After This Season? NFL Insider Shares Latest Update on Rams Star’s Plans

With Matthew Stafford set to turn 38 in a little over a week, an NFL insider shared speculation about the Los Angeles Rams quarterback’s future.

The NFL and its fans have slowly watched as the league’s top quarterbacks have undergone a changing of the guard, with many of the faces that dominated the 2000s and early 2010s now retired. However, two signal-callers from that era still suit up every Sunday, with Aaron Rodgers playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Matthew Stafford leading the Los Angeles Rams on another postseason run.

While the NFL world will likely wait most of the offseason to find out what Rodgers will do, one NFL insider shared what Stafford is feeling ahead of a possible return for an 18th season.

NFL Insider Shares the Latest on Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford’s Future

When asked about Stafford’s plans for the future, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport shared some insight based on conversations he has heard around the league.

In an interview with NFL Gameday ahead of the conference championship round of the NFL playoffs, Rapoport shared, “Rams QB Matthew Stafford believes he has good football left in him, saying no matter what, he wants to be back next year.”

Rapoport noted this was before the Rams made a run to the NFC Championship Game, and if Los Angeles were able to cap the season with a Super Bowl victory, only Stafford knows whether he would want to walk away from the game on top. However, after an MVP-caliber season, many would agree with the veteran that he has plenty left in the tank for another run.

While he was a frontrunner for the MVP this season, along with New England Patriots QB Drake Maye, Stafford finished slightly lower than expected in PFSN’s QB Impact Metric, ranking sixth in the league with a score of 84.4. While he wasn’t the top quarterback under center, the Rams were a well-oiled machine in 2025, ranking as PFSN’s top overall offense with a score of 92.3 in the Offense Impact metric.

While Stafford has been solid for the Rams during his time in Los Angeles, he’s looked more akin to the version that won a Super Bowl in 2021. After falling short of the mark the past three seasons, Stafford crossed the 4,000-yard threshold again in 2025, completing 388 of 597 passes for 4,707 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions.

With receivers like Puka Nacua and Davante Adams at his disposal, combined with a solid one-two rushing attack featuring Kyren Williams and Blake Corum, there is little reason not to run it back for another year after one of the best seasons of his lengthy career. While the end of Stafford’s career may be nearing, there is no reason to rush it if he is still playing at a high level.
