Matthew Golden’s NFL Draft Scouting Report

Though he broke out late as a 2025 NFL Draft prospect, Matthew Golden has plenty of desirable qualities as a potential high-end movement-Z and impact starter at the NFL level.

At 5’11”, 191 pounds, Golden’s 4.29 40-yard dash has caused many to bill him as a speed WR primarily, but that’s a misconception. He certainly has high-end speed and burst, but he wins with his fluid and twitched-up mobility as a separator, and his liquid-smooth catch-point skills.

With a vast route tree, a prolific separation framework, slippery RAC ability, and stalwart conversion skills, Golden is a complete offensive catalyst, in the mold of Chris Olave or T.Y. Hilton.

Matthew Golden’s Latest NFL Draft Projection

PFSN’s Ian Cummings projects that Golden will be picked No. 23 overall by the Green Bay Packers in his latest seven-round mock draft.

Cummings said, “If a first-tier WR prospect like Matthew Golden falls to the Green Bay Packers, will they take him? That’s a question without a clear answer, but there is surface-level interest to note. Green Bay met with Golden at the NFL Combine and on a 30 visit, making contact twice.

“In an offense emulating the “many mouths to feed” model that teams like Buffalo have championed, Golden’s presence as a dynamic movement-Z WR with separation chops, RAC ability, and vertical body control could be invaluable. My comp for Golden: T.Y. Hilton.”

Where Does Matthew Golden Rank Among 2025’s WR Prospects?

Here are the top 10 WR rankings for the 2025 NFL Draft, according to PFSN Draft Analyst Ian Cummings:

10. Kyle Williams, Washington State
9. Jayden Higgins, Iowa State
8. Tre Harris, Ole Miss
7. Jaylin Noel, Iowa State
6. Luther Burden III, Missouri
5. Jalen Royals, Utah State
4. Tetairoa McMillan, Arizona
3. Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State
2. Matthew Golden, Texas
1. Travis Hunter, Colorado

There’s virtually no consensus at the top of the 2025 NFL Draft rankings. Some evaluators prefer McMillan, while others prefer Matthew Golden. My scale has a built-in preference toward burst, separation, and space-winning skills. That is Golden’s specialty.

After transferring from Houston, Golden achieved career-high numbers with the Texas Longhorns in 2024, amassing 58 catches for 987 yards and nine touchdowns. The production doesn’t pop, and it has sowed uncertainty, but the tape speaks effusively in Golden’s favor.

At 5’11”, 191 pounds, Golden is as explosive as they come. His fluid and twitched-up mobility enables him to tear apart coverage looks, and he flashes incredible body control and feel at the catch point. At his peak, he can be a WR1 in the mold of Chris Olave.
