Fourth-year quarterback Will Levis was one of the league’s biggest casualties on cutdown day after being released by the Tennessee Titans. Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms blamed Levis for getting himself cut after his earlier comments about being one of the league’s better quarterbacks.
Chris Simms Blasts Will Levis for Titans’ Departure
During Monday’s segment of the “Pro Football Talk” show, Simms suggested that the former Penn State quarterback had talked himself out of a roster spot.
“The point being with Will Levis, what we said a few weeks ago. Don’t come out into the pre-training camp press conference and when you’re not even the backup at that point and tell us you’re one of the 32 best,” Simms said. “It’s career suicide… I mean, why do it?
“We saw him slip in the training camp, in one of the scrimmages, and he became NFL meme territory and property right away. It was a self-inflicted stupid wound by him. I’ll be interested to see where he ends up when it’s all said and done.”

Levis was selected No. 33 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, and the quarterback fought his way up the depth chart to finish the season as the Titans’ QB1. He managed 1,808 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions in nine games.
The former Kentucky Wildcats star was the Titans’ starter in 2024, but he missed the entire 2025 season after undergoing surgery to repair a shoulder injury.
Prior to his injury, the Titans selected Cam Ward No. 1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft and made him the undisputed starter. The Titans also signed veteran Mitchell Trubisky to a two-year, $10.5 million deal in March, further sidelining Levis.

Simms further piled on Levis’s abilities and the quarterback’s elevated self-perception in the NFL.
“He’s an athlete who plays quarterback instead of a quarterback who’s a great athlete,” Simms added. “He feels a bit like Johnny B. Goode, remember that? Like, ‘Hey, I’m the No. 1 recruit in America. Everyone’s coming to see me. Look at my biceps, look at my hot girlfriend. I got it all. Woo! I can throw the ball over the mountains there.’
“But yeah, you don’t make great decisions, and the ball goes everywhere and sometimes misses the mountain altogether. So, he’s got some work to do, as we know. Somebody will take a shot on him because he’s got physical ability. So they’ll bring him in, practice squad, see if they can work with him. Maybe he ends up being the third-stringer somewhere; we’ll see what happens.”
In his last full season in 2024, Levis tallied 2,091 passing yards on 63.1% completion, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 12 games, finishing No. 39 in PFN’s QB Impact Metric.
Levis went unclaimed on waivers after being let go, making him a free agent able to sign with any team or its practice squad.
