It’s not looking successful for Matt Eberflus. The Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator needs to go. His old-school approach is not working for the Cowboys and is making them one of the worst defensive teams. Change is needed. Eberflus needs to be fired. He was already fired by the Chicago Bears before joining the Cowboys in 2025.
And now the same problems that happened in Chicago are happening in Dallas. Everflus kept having repeat collapses and poor adjustments, and what is happening for the Cowboys: repeat collapses and poor adjustments. The Cowboys need a change in their defense to even have a chance.
What Is Wrong With Matt Eberflus’s System?
First, his scheme mismatch is easily predictable to the opposing quarterback. The opponents figure out the play quickly, exploit it, and, in return, get more points. Eberflus isn’t fond of changing the play; being intuitive or able to adapt on demand isn’t his strong suit. He always follows the playbook.
Players are frustrated by this type of approach because the game changes on the field; you have to be able to adapt. The players feel like they are on a leash, controlled and unable to make their own decisions.
For example, the Cowboys’ best defenders, like Trevon Diggs, are built for speed and attacking. Eberflus runs a safe zone-heavy system, which slows everything down. Players known for speed cannot be slowed down. Instead of letting players play intuitively, he makes them read and react. The player’s trust is restricted.
And when players like Diggs lose trust, it’s not long until the whole locker room follows. The Cowboys are meant to be a team, so when there is a divide between the defensive coordinator and the entire defensive line, communication is bound to break down.
Fans demand a change. Fans deserve a change. The Super Bowl window is slowly disappearing with Eberflus’s system. It does not work with the type of players the Cowboys have. History is repeating itself with the Cowboys being the new Bears in Eberflus’s eyes. The firing is coming for him.
And with the Denver Broncos scoring 44 points on the Cowboys on Oct 26, that is not ideal, especially given that they now allow an average of over 30 PPG. The Cowboys used to average under 30 PPG, so having it increase is not good. That is way too many points to give to the opposing team.
The Cowboys went from good to bad under Eberflus. Currently, they rank 31st and have an F grade according to the PFSN Defense Impact Metric.
The Defense is in a bind with players disliking this approach and Eberflus refusing to change the system. He should try to adapt to the players; they are the ones on the field, not Eberflus. Guidance would be nice, but that’s the least that Eberflus is giving the Cowboys at the moment.
Uniquely enough, Dallas used to be all about defense, and now they are one of the worst defenses in the NFL.
If Dallas wants their defense back as well as their season, they need to take away Eberflus’s headset before it is too late. It’s time for a new defensive coordinator; it’s their only hope.

Totally agree. Nothing against the man – Eberflus – but he is clearly not up to the task of coaching our defense.
