Why Did Panthers LB Luke Kuechly Retire in the Prime of His NFL Career?

Kuechly appeared well on his way to going down as one of the best linebackers in NFL history prior to his shocking early retirement after just eight seasons with the Panthers. He put together quite an impressive career in Carolina in such a short time, including being selected as an All-Pro seven times.

The star defender abruptly announced his retirement in 2020, just two weeks after the conclusion of the 2019 season, when he played in every game and was selected to his seventh consecutive Pro Bowl.

He was still just 28 years old, but decided that he had had enough with the league. He expanded on his decision during an appearance on the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast.

“You used to just go smack dudes and have no issues. I would go hit a guy, and I’m like, ‘That didn’t really feel great.’ The last game of the year, I was like, ‘I’m done.’ I remember being like, ‘Man, I’m just done.’ I just remember after that game, I was like, ‘You don’t got it anymore,’ ” explained Kuechly.

His concerning injury history, particularly suffering at least three known concussions, admittedly played a role in his decision to retire early.

Kuechly was diagnosed with one in three consecutive seasons between 2015 and 2017, which forced him to miss ten total games. Her insisted that some of these head injuries had a negative physical impact on his final two seasons, though his status among the best linebackers in the NFL didn’t change.

Kuechly had an active streak of seven consecutive All-Pro selections when he retired, including five of them as a first-teamer.

He has 688 total solo tackles in his eight-year NFL career, totaling 18 interceptions and 12.5 sacks along the way. His final year in Carolina saw him finish second in the PFSN NFL LB Impact Rankings, further demonstrating how elite he was when he retired early.
