Who Has Been Fired During the 2023-24 Season?

The first head coach to be removed from his post was Josh McDaniels. His second tenure as a head coach lasted just 25 games before he was fired after Week 8 of the 2023 NFL season. McDaniels’ head coach record sits at a woeful 20-33 without any winning seasons in his four. He has yet to make it through two full seasons in a single tenure as a head coach.

After McDaniels, Panthers head coach Frank Reich was let go after just 11 games, making him the 32nd one-and-done head coach in NFL history. Reich led the Panthers to a woeful 1-10 record with rookie QB Bryce Young at the helm. Chris Tabor will now take over for the Panthers.

Los Angeles Chargers also released both Brandon Staley and Tom Telesco after Week 15. The Chargers made the decision to fire Staley following the team’s disastrous 63-21 Thursday Night Football loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. The decision ends a three-season run for Staley and a 24-24 record.

As soon as the NFL regular season ended, the Atlanta Falcons decided to fire head coach Arthur Smith, technically making him the first victim of this year’s Black Monday. The Falcons finished 7-10 for the third time in three years with Smith as head coach. Smith finished with a 21-30 record during his three seasons with Atlanta.

Next to go was Commanders head coach Ron Rivera. The Commanders finished 2023 with a 4-13 record after a loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the final week of the year, and that was the last game of the Ron Rivera era in Washington.

In a somewhat surprising move, the Titans decided to move on from Mike Vrabel, who just finished his sixth season with the team. Just two years removed from a 12-5 season, the Titans are looking for a new head coach.

Additionally, the Seahawks and head coach Pete Carroll amicably agreed he would transition into an advisor role with the team.
