Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson has long been one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. A genuine difference-maker, the 25-year-old is coming off a season in which he caught 103 passes for 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns.
It was Jefferson’s third season with more than 100 catches, second with double-digit touchdowns and fifth with more than 1,000 receiving yards. He’s been to four Pro Bowls during his five-year career, taking home NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2022 while holding the record for most career receiving yards per game at 96.5.
So, it’s fair to ask, does Jefferson have anything else to prove?
Justin Jefferson Opts To Attend Vikings OTAs
In a day and age when many accomplished NFL veterans choose to skip voluntary OTAs in the spring, Jefferson made the mature decision to show up and participate. It marked the first time in three seasons that the star wideout was a “regular attendee in the offseason program,” according to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert.
Jefferson, a first-round draft pick in 2022, isn’t battling the Vikings’ front office for a new contract. He isn’t rehabbing a major injury. And he isn’t using his superstar status to get extra time off. Jefferson just wanted to build chemistry with his teammates, particularly new quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
“It’s definitely important to gain a little bit of sight of what the new year is coming to look like, to build that connection with my teammates and especially with my quarterback,” Jefferson told Seifert. “It’s definitely great to be out here early to kind of get in the feel of what this year is going to be like.
“Of course, getting the plays back, going through the plays again and just being out here. Just the whole feeling is always a great vibe so when they asked me to be here and asked for me to be a part of it, it was a no-brainer.”

It’s understandable why the Vikings would want Jefferson on the field. McCarthy is heading into his first year as the starting quarterback in Minnesota after Sam Darnold bolted for Seattle in free agency. There could be growing pains, too, especially since McCarthy missed the entire 2024 season due to a knee injury that he suffered in the preseason last year.
Jefferson’s decision to attend Vikings OTAs is a win-win. He benefits by getting familiar with his quarterback. Ditto for McCarthy who gets extra work with his No. 1 receiver. The duo getting on the same page while running head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offense during the summer could pay big dividends come Week 1.
What that will mean for a Vikings team that won 14 games last season is anyone’s guess. Minnesota is banking on McCarthy to step right in and lead the Vikings back to the playoffs. It’s his job to lose, considering there’s only Sam Howell and Brett Rypien behind him on the quarterback depth chart.
