San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York’s arrest was already destined to become one of the NFL’s strangest stories of the summer. Then Dave Portnoy entered the conversation with a line that carried a lot of history.
York was arrested Sunday in East Palestine, Ohio, on suspicion of engaging in prostitution. The original charge was later amended to disorderly conduct, and York pleaded no contest Monday to that charge and a separate misdemeanor count of possessing criminal tools.

“Disgusting behavior. Days like these make me proud to be a Patriot,” Portnoy wrote in an X post indicating his fandom of the New England Patriots.
The Barstool Sports founder was being sarcastic, as Patriots owner Robert Kraft was charged with soliciting prostitution in Florida in 2019 after a massage parlor investigation. Prosecutors dropped charges in 2020 after courts barred the use of surveillance video, and Kraft had previously issued a public apology.

Grant Cohn focused on the timing of York’s arrest. “9:35 in the morning? On God’s day?” Cohn wrote in his reaction.

Brandon Perna found a way to connect York’s situation with another bizarre NFL development in Ohio.

JP Acosta offered an even shorter verdict: “INSANE behavior,” he wrote in his reaction.
Ross Read reacted to the reported location and circumstances with a much harsher joke.
“Jed York is worth $500 million and was busted getting trailer park box,” Read wrote in his post. “That’s a nasty, nasty man.”

The football meme account Pardon My Meme also reacted to the news with two words: “No way,” in its post while sharing an edited version of the location of the arrest with the electrical substation behind it.

According to WKBN, York responded to an ad on a known prostitution website that had actually been posted by an undercover agent with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force as part of a sting operation.
He arrived at the agreed meeting location with the cellphone he’d used to arrange the encounter, and that phone became the basis for the separate criminal-tools charge.
Under a plea agreement, the prostitution charge was reduced to disorderly conduct. York pleaded no contest to that misdemeanor and to possessing criminal tools.

York received one day in jail for each offense, served concurrently, with credit for the day he had already spent in custody. He was also fined $1,150.
The 49ers said the legal matter had been resolved and declined further comment, but the league revealed that York’s case will be reviewed under the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.
York has served as the 49ers’ top executive since 2008 and became the franchise’s principal owner in 2024.
The legal process moved quickly, but the internet moved faster.
Between Portnoy invoking the Patriots’ own uncomfortable history, Perna blaming Ohio and Cohn questioning the Sunday morning timing, York’s arrest became instant NFL social media material before the paperwork was barely finished.
