The Houston Texans have added another young weapon to their wide receiver room, acquiring Kayshon Boutte from the New England Patriots in a trade that could benefit both teams.
The move comes after the Texans lost second-year wide receiver Jayden Higgins to a season-ending ACL injury, while Boutte had become a logical trade candidate in New England following the team’s additions at wide receiver during the offseason.

The Patriots are sending Boutte to Houston in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round pick, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The trade was first reported by Tom Pelissero.
“Trade! The Patriots are sending WR Kayshon Boutte to the Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick, sources tell @ringer @netflixsports,” Pelissero shared on X.
“It’s a 28 7th rounder, the #Saints one, going in the trade. Kayshon Boutte heads to the #Texans,” Rapoport wrote.
Boutte is entering the final year of his rookie contract and had seen his future in New England become uncertain after the Patriots added A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs to their receiving corps.

The 24-year-old was selected by New England in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Following a quiet rookie season, Boutte started 23 regular-season games for the Patriots in 2024 and 2025 combined, totaling 1,140 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns while enjoying his best campaign last year.
Houston, meanwhile, needed another receiver after Higgins suffered his season-ending knee injury. The Texans had explored the market for help at the position before ultimately landing Boutte.
Reed now heads to the Patriots after appearing in seven games for Houston as a rookie in 2025. The sixth-round pick recorded 14 tackles and a fumble recovery while spending much of his time on special teams.
With both teams having clear reasons to make the move, NFL analysts were quick to see the logic behind the deal.
“Feels like a win-win for both sides,” PFN’s Jacob Infante wrote and explained that “Boutte gets away from a crowded Pats WR room with more of a chance to shine in Houston. The Pats get a solid young safety and a draft pick for a WR they likely weren’t going to extend anyway.”

Brandon Austin also viewed Boutte as an underrated addition for a Houston receiving corps that suddenly needed help, saying, “Underrated pickup for a depleted Texans WR corps. Boutte made some big plays for the Patriots in 2025.”

Meanwhile, Fantasy Football Analyst Jason Katz couldn’t help but mark the trade with a pun, commenting: “The Texans made a Boutte call”

PFN’s Kyle Soppe noted what Boutte’s arrival could mean for Houston’s No. 1 receiver, Nico Collins.
“Nico Collins was targeted on 27.2% of his routes with Jayden Higgins on the field. Up from 23.6% with him off. His aDOT was a full yard higher as well,” Soppe said.

“Not a major move, but as a Nico stan, I’m good with a non-threatening addition that can attract even some attention vertically,” he added.
Soppe’s point is that Boutte doesn’t necessarily need to become a major target hog to help the Texans. If he can provide another vertical threat, his presence could prevent defenses from focusing quite as heavily on Collins, who was ranked 10th in PFN’s WR Impact Rating with an 80.5 grade after going 1,117 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns in 2025.

On the other hand, Ian Cummings called Boutte a “good #2 option to help build CJ Stroud’s confidence back up.” by noting his stats in 2025: 22.7% CROE, 2.2% drop rate, 0.74 EPA per tgt.
“Not the most explosive, but he’s nuanced, fluid & physical, isn’t scared v. press, can find soft spots in zone & is uber-reliable at the catch,” Cummings said of Boutte.
