John Harbaugh didn’t stay on the sidelines for long after a stunning split with Baltimore ended one of the NFL’s most successful long-term partnerships. New York moved quickly, handing the Super Bowl–winning coach a five-year deal and signaling a clear reset for a franchise searching for direction.
The bigger question now isn’t why the Giants hired Harbaugh, but how he’s approaching this next chapter… and why he sounds genuinely energized by it.
John Harbaugh Is Excited To Coach the Giants
Harbaugh is stepping into New York with clear eyes about the challenge ahead. The Giants finished 4-13 last season, ranking 24th in the PFSN NFL Offense Impact metrics and 23rd on the defensive side.
This is not a ready-made contender. Still, less than an hour after finalizing his five-year deal, Harbaugh sounded energized rather than cautious, already framing the job around opportunity instead of repair.
“It starts with the players,” Harbaugh said. “I’m just fired up to coach these guys and get to work.” He followed that quickly with, “It’s a great group, and I’m looking forward to building this team up.”
While the Giants’ history and ownership mattered, Harbaugh made it clear the roster evaluation drove his decision. During his visit, he met players like Cam Skattebo and studied the roster in detail. Compared to other openings, Harbaugh believed New York offered a path forward, even after a season that exposed issues on both sides of the ball.
That evaluation zeroed in on the quarterback position. Harbaugh closely studied a wide range of options across the league and college football, including Michael Penix Jr., Cam Ward, Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa, and prospects like Fernando Mendoza and Dante Moore. But the Giants’ situation, led by Jaxson Dart, stood out the most as the process deepened.
“First of all, all the quarterbacks of these teams, I was impressed with all these guys,” Harbaugh said. “They’re all up-and-comers; they’re all gonna have really great careers.” Then came the pivot. “But getting to know Jaxson, because this went a little further, I got a chance to talk to him, and I was really, really excited talking ball with Jaxson Dart.”
Harbaugh didn’t stop there. “His mindset is exactly what you’re looking for,” he said. “His enthusiasm and excitement for the game, and for every part of football, really got me fired up.” Those comments underscore why Dart became central to Harbaugh’s belief that the Giants’ rebuild has a solid foundation.
Ownership also played a meaningful role, particularly amid John Mara’s ongoing health battle. Harbaugh spoke warmly about his long-standing relationship with Mara, his time with Chris Mara, and meeting Steve Tisch, calling the Giants a “family” operation that appealed to him immediately. That structure helped solidify his comfort with the move.
Before committing, Harbaugh also leaned on Giants legends. He spent extensive time speaking with Eli Manning, Michael Strahan, and especially Tom Coughlin. “The No. 1 guy for me was Tom Coughlin; I spent a lot of time talking to Tom,” Harbaugh said, noting the parallels between their career stages.
With gratitude for his past and conviction about the future, Harbaugh now sounds fully ready to build something new; it’s starting with Dart.
