The New York Jets didn’t just have a fire sale at the trade deadline, they burned the entire house down. By shipping away defensive cornerstones like Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams, the organization made its intentions crystal clear: the 2025-26 season is over, and the full-scale rebuild for 2026 has begun.
For the players still left in the locker room under new head coach Aaron Glenn, the rest of the year has become an extended audition. For injured running back Braelon Allen, the clock is ticking for a different reason.
When Will Braelon Allen Return to the Field?
Allen first landed on the injured reserve list after suffering a leg injury against the Miami Dolphins in Week 4. While the initial severity was unknown, the diagnosis was later revealed to be an MCL sprain that required a significant recovery period. The injury occurred just as he was trying to find his footing in his second professional season.
After an excellent three-year career at Wisconsin, the Jets selected Allen in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He showed promise in a limited role during his rookie season, finishing with 334 rushing yards and two touchdowns as a backup.
Beyond his work on the ground, he also added 148 receiving yards, showcasing his potential as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. Before the injury this season, however, he was off to a slow start with less than 100 total yards from scrimmage through the first three games.
The team placed him on the injured reserve list shortly after the Week 4 injury, with an initial recovery timeline of eight to 12 weeks. That timetable would have put him on track for a return around Week 12, but the Jets have not indicated that a return is imminent. The Jets currently rank 29th on PFSN’s Offense Impact (OFFi).
A week after being placed on IR, Allen posted a picture of his knee on social media that suggested he had undergone surgery. At the time, ESPN’s Rich Cimini posted an update on X, formerly known as Twitter, confirming the decision.
He confirmed, “From Braelon Allen’s IG: Appears that he did opt for surgery. At the time of the injury, Aaron Glenn said Allen had the option of surgery or rehab, with the same timetable for return (2-3 months). There’s no point in rushing back for this season. #Jets”
With the organization clearly turning its attention toward the future, Allen will likely sit out the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign to ensure a full recovery. Considering the trade rumors that swirled around starting running back Breece Hall at the deadline, Allen’s role could expand significantly next season, making his long-term health the franchise’s top priority.
