‘I’m Worried’ – Pat McAfee Sounds Off on Broncos Punter Jeremy Crawshaw’s Struggles on TNF

Week 10 of the NFL season has certainly been one to forget. The Denver Broncos’ offense struggled to find any rhythm during their Thursday Night Football matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, who couldn’t crack Denver’s top defense according to PFSN’s Defensive Impact rankings. By a final score of 10-7, the Broncos have won in underwhelming fashion.

Drives for the Broncos repeatedly stalled, leading to punter Jeremy Crawshaw, a rookie from Australia who spent five years at the University of Florida. Crawshaw punted seven times in this game for a total of 293 yards, with an average punt of 41.9 yards and a long of 54 yards.

The average person doesn’t get much out of punter statistics, but watching him in the game reveals something completely different, to the point where former Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee spoke on the matter.

Pat McAfee Talks About Denver Broncos’ Punter Jeremy Crawshaw

As the game dragged on with Denver’s offense repeatedly stalling, the attention shifted to rookie punter Crawshaw, considering he ended up coming on the field at the end of most drives. With him being on the field and punting more than teams would prefer, Crawshaw’s faults were on display.

Several kicks by his team did not do a good job of flipping the field position in favor of the Broncos, which favored the Raiders. In this game, he lacked accuracy, placement, and control on his kicks. Thankfully, the Broncos’ defense is on lockdown, despite missing Patrick Surtain II this week.

The performance caught the eye of former Indianapolis Colts punter turned media personality, McAfee. During the game, he gave his honest opinion on Crawshaw’s struggles.

McAfee’s comment wasn’t an exaggeration; Crawshaw was clearly struggling. It was so bad that social media started discussing how Raiders punter AJ Cole outclassed him.

Execution was a primary factor in his misses tonight. McAfee also suggests that it might’ve been mental errors that amplified his misses.

Aside from technique, confidence matters in punting. If a punter starts to question himself, it could lead to the timing of the whole play being thrown off. For example, if on Crawshaw’s first punt he was rushed quickly and hit hard, that feeling of being rushed could stick with him and force him to move too quickly through his motions.

Regardless, Crawshaw did not have his best performance tonight, but the Broncos were able to pull out the win. He’ll have this next week to work on his mechanics and be ready for a Week 11 home matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
