When Jeff Hafley accepted the position to become the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins, he knew that making a solid first impression mattered a whole lot.
Cameras followed Hafley around on his first day in the job, coming to the Dolphins after serving as the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator. Now, though, Hafley will be in charge of getting the Dolphins’ roster ready for next season.
Dolphins HC Jeff Hafley Was Quite Busy on His First Day
As Hafley first entered the Dolphins’ offices, he made a beeline for his office and even kiddingly commented in the Dolphins’ team video about his own bathroom.
The video also showed Hafley signing his contract, making everything official. But he was asked about his socks, which feature pictures of his children. “Ah, my socks,” Hafley said.
“In special moments, whether it’s before games or on the way to games, I always have my daughters on them. So, I got multiple colors. With that, my daughters are always with me.” Hafley then walked through the Dolphins’ practice field alongside Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.
When Hafley took the podium for his first official comments to the public as Miami’s new head coach, he obviously wanted to make sure every word he said mattered. New Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan was alongside, too. The former Packers DC, who replaced Mike McDaniel in Miami, took his time and measured his words carefully.
“The culture of competition, hard work, resilience, and love for each other will bounce off the walls of this place day in and day out,” Hafley said. “To where you can’t deny what we’re about. I am truly humbled to stand here and be the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. And I take a lot of pride and responsibility in that.”
The 46-year-old also thanked Ross and his family for believing in him: “I do not take that lightly, and I will do everything I can for you and your family.”
Hafley, though, got choked up emotionally when he started thanking his family. “Hope and Leah, I thank you guys, and I thank Gina,” Hafley said, referring to his daughters and wife. “And I can tell you this about Gina. Gina’s not into this, so she can walk around and tell people that she’s married to the head coach of the Dolphins.

“She doesn’t care,” he said. “All she cares about is us, how I’m feeling, supporting me, and doing everything she can for those kids. I’m lucky today, too, because I got my mom, my sister, brother, here today.” At this point, the Dolphins’ cameras caught them all wiping away tears.
“Flying here to be with me means everything and I thank them for that. And for my real coach, my dad,” he stated while pointing skyward. “My first coach who toughened me up, who was there for me.” Hafley then spoke about how storied an organization the Dolphins are and said that Miami deserved a winner.
According to the PFSN NFL Offense Impact metrics, measured throughout the regular season, the Dolphins’ offense had an impact score of 73.1 and graded out to a C. As for the PFSN NFL Defense Impact metrics, where Hafley has some experience in running a defense, the Dolphins’ defense had an impact score of 67.6 and graded out to a D+.
Among those in attendance for Hafley’s first press conference were ESPN NFL analyst and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, who had played a role in the hiring process. Also, Dolphins players Jordan Phillips, Malik Washington, Jordan Colbert, and Tahj Washington were among those gathered.
If Hafley’s emotional speech and dedication to his job carry the same weight they did on his first day, then the Dolphins just might be headed in the right direction.
