The Detroit Lions had a critical showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football in Week 11. The winner of this game would put themselves in the best position to stay in the race for the No. 1 seed in the conference.
Unfortunately for the Lions, Philadelphia’s defense took over and dominated from start to finish. Although Detroit’s defense kept them in the game, the offense never found a rhythm. Following the loss, former Lions quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky shared some concerning stats about Jared Goff’s night.
Dan Orlovsky Sheds Light on Jared Goff’s Bad Night in Philadelphia
According to Orlovsky, on the 14 dropbacks when the Eagles pressured Goff, the veteran quarterback completed zero passes on 12 attempts and was sacked twice for -12 yards. That’s about as bad as it gets, especially for a quarterback who typically thrives in structure and has played some of the best football of his career in Detroit.
Goff struggling under pressure is no surprise. Going back to his time in Los Angeles with Sean McVay, he has always had issues when defenses collapse the pocket. However, Sunday night was the first time in a long time he looked uncomfortable under center for Detroit. The timing was off, the footwork looked shaky, and the confidence simply wasn’t there.

Not only did he struggle when pressure was applied, but he also struggled when he had clean pockets. Goff ended the game completing 37% of his passes (14/37) for 255 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The veteran signal-caller was so uncomfortable in the pocket all night, causing what should have been easy completions to go incomplete.
Heading into Sunday night’s game, Goff had a QB impact score of 85.0, according to PFSN’s QB impact metric. Even after the Lions struggled against a dominant Packers pass rush at the beginning of the season in Week 1, no one expected Goff to have similar issues against the Eagles.

After the poor performance, some Lions fans are back to doubting Goff. While it’s totally understandable to criticize his bad game, claiming Detroit needs another QB because Goff can’t take them to the Super Bowl is absurd. He’s coming off an MVP-type season, and besides two rough games against the Packers and Eagles this year, he has been great.
While Detroit fell out of the playoff picture with that loss, there is still plenty of time for them to get back in it. These two teams will likely meet in the playoffs, and don’t be surprised if the Lions are more prepared and have answers for the Eagles.
