The Buffalo Bills signed wide receiver Khalil Shakir to a lucrative contract extension in the offseason after a nice 2024 season. However, the slot receiver has struggled to maintain momentum this season, often getting off to slow starts for Buffalo’s offense.
Week 11’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is no exception, as he has yet to be targeted through almost two quarters of action. Let’s see what is going on with Shakir.
What Happened to Buffalo Bills WR Khalil Shakir?
While the Bills struggled a week ago against the Dolphins, Shakir was one of the few playmakers who provided a solid presence, hauling in seven receptions for 58 yards. However, the Bills’ offense has been somewhat puzzling this season, as the team has struggled to maintain momentum.
Shakir finally got a target with 5:21 remaining in the second quarter, which he was unable to haul in, but the Buccaneers’ defense has virtually eliminated his presence. Slow starts are nothing new for him, though, as Shakir has been held to 25 or fewer receiving yards in the first half seven times prior to Week 11.
Shakir is attempting to build upon a great 2024 season, during which he caught 76 passes for 821 yards and four touchdowns. While he’s almost matched his touchdown output in 2025 with three trips to the end zone, his yards per reception have dropped a bit from 10.8 in 2024 to 10.2 in 2025.
With no catches and down Keon Coleman in Week 11, the Bills need to find ways to get Shakir involved in the offense. According to PFSN’s NFL WR Impact (WRi), Shakir has a 2025 rating of 82.4, ranking as the 13th-best WR in the NFL.
WRi assigns a numerical score that factors in a receiver’s efficiency and share of their team’s targets, while also incorporating proprietary metrics for yards after catch over expected and receptions over expected.
Between Shakir, Allen, and Bills running back James Cook, Buffalo has PFSN’s third-highest Offensive Impact score of 89.3, sitting just behind the Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Rams. However, they had one of their worst outings of the season in Week 10, scoring a 68.8 against the Dolphins, who have the 27th-ranked defense according to PFSN’s Defensive Impact rating.
They’ve been able to get contributions from some surprising faces, such as Ty Johnson and Tyrell Shavers, against the Buccaneers. However, if they want to pull away from Tampa Bay, it will take their more notable offensive weapons getting involved and starting to make an impact on the game.
