What Happened to Keon Coleman? A Look at Why the Bills WR Is Benched vs. Texans

The Bills have once again benched wide receiver Keon Coleman. Here is the latest update on his situation as the Buffalo takes on the Texans.

Keon Coleman missed the game between the Buffalo Bills and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to a coach’s decision. The wide receiver was healthy, but reports said that he was made inactive due to being late to meetings and practices multiple times.

Coleman and McDermott spoke about the decision recently, with the wide receiver acknowledging that he needs to do a better job, and the coach refusing to elaborate on the reasons, but also stating that he wants to see growth from the second-year receiver. It appears that Coleman may need to do more.

Keon Coleman Benched For The Second Straight Game

Eric Turner from Cover 1 reported that Coleman is likely to be out for the second straight game. The Bills will play against the Houston Texans on Thursday night, and Turner, who covers the team, states that Buffalo could make him a healthy scratch one more time.

The report turned out to be true as Coleman is a healthy scratch for a second straight game. It’s safe to say that the Bills’ offense did not miss Coleman against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The group had one of its best performances of the season, scoring 44 points. Josh Allen accounted for six touchdowns, and many other players had a Sunday afternoon to remember.

It’s not like Coleman is also a significant factor on the offense. He has 32 receptions, 330 yards, and three touchdowns in 9 games during the 2025 season. PFSN’s WR Impact Metric puts him with a 72.2 grade, below Khalil Shakir, the No. 1 wide receiver for the Bills.

The offense saw the emergence of a new weapon. Tyrell Shavers had a breakout game in Coleman’s absence. He finished with four receptions, 90 yards, and a touchdown, including a 43-yard reception. Another player who picked up the slack was running back Ty Johnson, who turned on the jets and had 61 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Arguably, a bigger miss for the Bills would be Dalton Kincaid, who’s going to miss another game. Kincaid is their No. 1 tight end and has 448 yards and four touchdowns this season.

No other player on the roster brings his intelligence to find space in the intermediate routes and effectiveness on seam routes, while Coleman’s skillset, with 50/50 balls as his best trait, is something you can live without.

Coleman’s absence might not matter at the end of the day, with Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud missing another game due to a concussion. But when preparing for a playoff run, the Bills will hope that Coleman reaches his peak in January even if it comes at the expense of a few lessons.

Buffalo Bills’ Insights for Week 12

Team: Week 12 marks the start of a four-game road stretch in five weeks. They play at Houston, Pittsburgh, New England, and Cleveland, with a home game against Cincinnati in the middle.

QB: Josh Allen moved to the top spot for the PFSN Quarterback Impact Rankings (QBi) season leader. Allen has finished in the top three every season since 2020.

Offense: Buffalo has committed six turnovers in the last two games after committing six in the first eight games.

Defense: The Bills have forced eight turnovers in their last four games. Buffalo forced five turnovers in the first six games.

Fantasy: Over the past month, Josh Allen has had more games with multiple rush TD than multiple pass TD. As good as he’s been, none of his pass catchers are consistent enough to lock in (Khalil Shakir had -3 receiving yards on Sunday, a game in which Buffalo scored 44 points).
