NFL Insider Reveals Truth Behind Giants’ Rumored Interest in Bill Belichick After Legendary HC’s Recent Statement

After Bill Belichick dismissed any NFL return, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reveals whether the Giants ever pursued the legendary coach.

After parting ways with head coach Brian Daboll earlier this week, the New York Giants have begun searching for their next franchise leader. That search sparked immediate speculation linking them to former NFL great and current North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick.

Belichick publicly dismissed the idea of an NFL return on Saturday morning, but it still left one lingering question: were the Giants actually interested in him in the first place?

Were the Giants Seriously Interested in Bill Belichick?

The Giants dismissed Brian Daboll on Monday, Nov. 10, after falling to 2–8 with their offense ranking 26th in PFSN’s Offensive Impact metric. With the vacancy open, senior NFL insider Albert Breer suggested that Belichick “would walk on hot coals to get that job,” sparking speculation about a possible reunion between the legendary coach and his former team.

Belichick released a statement Saturday firmly denying any interest in returning to the NFL or joining the Giants. But according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, New York wasn’t pursuing him anyway.

“Despite the obvious connections to six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick and the organization’s respect for his accomplishments, I’m told he was never on their radar and wouldn’t have been now, something that was true well before his statement Friday night disavowing interest in any NFL jobs,” she wrote.

The two sides never had any communication about New York’s vacancy. It wasn’t happening,” Russini added, removing any possibilities of reunion in the foreseeable future as well.

Belichick’s roots with the Giants fueled much of the speculation. He spent 12 seasons in New York from 1979 to 1990, beginning as a special teams and defensive assistant before rising to defensive coordinator and helping secure two Super Bowl titles. That success propelled him into his first head-coaching job with the Cleveland Browns.

While Belichick expressed deep appreciation for the organization and its ownership, he made it clear he is not pursuing any NFL opportunities:

“I have great respect and genuinely care for the New York Giants organization and both the Mara and Tisch families,” the statement read. “The New York Giants played an important role in my life and in my coaching journey.

“It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach (Bill) Parcells’ staff for over a decade. However, despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies.”

Belichick’s legendary run with the Patriots came to an end in 2023. After a year away from coaching, he joined North Carolina in December 2024 on a five-year, $50 million deal that runs through 2030.

“My focus remains solely on continuing to improve this team, develop players, and build a program that makes Tar Heel fans proud. We’re on to Wake Forest.”

North Carolina currently sits at No. 76 in the PFSN College Football Playoff Rankings. Following last week’s win over Stanford, they remain in the hunt for bowl eligibility. They must win two of their final three games.
