Rookie quarterback Jaxon Dart and running back Cam Skattebo’s infectious energy and youth took the New York Giants by storm in 2025, as the franchise turned the keys over to the rookies in Week 4.
The energy has been electric through four weeks, but a devastating injury has likely ended Skattebo’s rookie campaign just as he was hitting his stride. Who will fill the void left on the Giants’ depth chart by Skattebo’s unique and energetic presence?
Who Will Step Up on the New York Giants’ RB Depth Chart After Losing Cam Skattebo?
Skattebo had already gotten a good start in the Week 8 NFC East showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles. He had turned three carries into 12 yards while hauling in a nice 18-yard touchdown strike from Dart to tie the game 7-7.
However, as the Giants were driving down the field late in the second quarter, Dart targeted Skattebo on a short pass. While Eagles linebacker Zach Baun was able to deflect the pass, during the ensuing tackle, Skattebo’s legs got caught underneath his body, injuring his right ankle. It was a gruesome injury as he was carted off with an aircast on his right leg.
Before his injury, Skattebo was the 21st-ranked running back in the league based on PFSN’s RB Impact metric.

While the injury is upsetting, given Skattebo’s start to the season, the Giants must look to someone to step up. Tyrone Tracy Jr. now gets to build upon his rookie 2024 campaign, where he appeared in all 17 games, starting in 12. He finished with 839 rushing yards and five touchdowns while also being a reliable target out of he backfield, adding 38 receptions for 284 yards and one more touchdown.
Tracy’s dual-threat ability makes him a dangerous weapon, capable of stretching defenses on the ground and through the air. With Dart already using Skattebo often in the passing game, Tracy should be able to slide into that role and develop chemistry with the rookie quarterback as they get more snaps.
In five games this season, Tracy has rushed 35 times for 120 yards and a touchdown, along with eight receptions for 54 yards. Devin Singletary is also on the roster. After a brutal 2024 campaign hampered by injuries, his production dropped to 437 rushing yards, four touchdowns, and 119 receiving yards.
While the season was a letdown for the team and its fans, Singletary’s experience and veteran savvy provide unique value. He hasn’t gotten much going yet in 2025 with 26 carries for 84 yards, but with snaps available, the veteran will surely find his way onto the field more.
