The reaction followed a youth athletic event in Ohio, where McAfee and Trump shared the spotlight during the Patriot Games finale. McAfee has maintained that his focus was on the student-athletes and their scholarship opportunity.
This explanation, however, did little to quiet critics, prompting a former NFL player to push back.
Breiden Fehoko Defends McAfee as Critics Question Donald Trump Ties
Former NFL defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko stepped into the discussion after McAfee faced criticism for appearing alongside Trump at the 2026 Patriot Games finale. Fehoko, who played for the Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers, defended the ESPN personality while accusing critics of applying different standards to sports figures.
Fehoko reshared a White House post showing Trump arriving at the event and wrote on X, “You are an icon, PatMcAfeeShow. All these crybabies on here ain’t have jack (expletive) to say when LeBron was twerking on stage with Hillary Clinton. MAGA 🇺🇸”
His argument centered on what he viewed as inconsistent reactions toward athletes and sports personalities who engage with politicians. Fehoko pointed to LeBron James’ public support for Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election as a comparison.

James endorsed Clinton during that election and appeared with her at a Cleveland rally alongside Cavaliers teammate J.R. Smith. Fehoko used that history to question why McAfee should face intense criticism for appearing with Trump at a sporting event.
The controversy began after McAfee met Trump at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on August 11. McAfee then traveled with the president to SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, where they watched the Patriot Games finale from the front row.

The event featured 120 high school athletes aged 14 to 17 from across the country. The competition offered $250,000 in scholarships and was part of the Trump administration’s Freedom 250 initiative.
McAfee later explained that his interest centered on the athletes and the event itself through his X post.
He said, “Had a BLAST celebrating high schoolers from across the country with the Heads of Disney, ABC, ESPN, and… The United States Of America. I’m proud of all parties getting behind this important initiative to keep future generations excited about remaining active. Cheers to the incredible contestants and to next year’s Patriot Games.”

The ESPN personality has previously interacted with Trump, including a Veterans Day interview in November 2025. He also took his show to Washington, D.C., earlier in 2026 for a UFC event held at the White House.
McAfee has not officially endorsed Trump, but his repeated public interactions with the president have generated questions about his political position. Fehoko’s response adds further context to the debate, with the former defensive tackle making clear that he sees the criticism as unfair.
