As the 2026 NFL Draft nears, player comparisons are a popular debate, especially when it comes to the quarterback and consensus No. 1 overall pick, Fernando Mendoza.
During a recent segment on Fox Sports’ “First Things First,” one familiar name surfaced early when Matt Ryan was floated as a potential comp. But former NFL head coach Eric Mangini offered a different perspective, leading the discussion toward a quarterback he knows firsthand. Instead of focusing on arm strength or prototypical size, Mangini pointed to traits that often define long-term success in the NFL.
Why Eric Mangini Compares Fernando Mendoza to Chad Pennington
Mangini acknowledged the logic behind comparing Mendoza to Matt Ryan, particularly from a personality standpoint. Both quarterbacks carry themselves with poise and professionalism, traits that translate well to the position. Still, Mangini played devil’s advocate with a different signal-caller, Chad Pennington, whom the analyst coached during his three-year stint with the New York Jets.
“I think that’s an interesting comparison,” Mangini said. “I really liked Matt Ryan when I got to know him during the quarterback interview process, and I understand why that would be a comp from a personality standpoint. I looked at it more from a guy that I worked with, Chad Pennington in New York, where two guys are more precision as opposed to power.”
That distinction matters. Mendoza has not built his reputation on overwhelming arm strength or highlight-reel throws.
Instead, his game is rooted in accuracy, timing, and decision-making. Mangini emphasized that Mendoza consistently places the ball where his receivers can make plays, avoiding the kinds of off-target throws that stall drives.
He also pointed to processing ability as a key shared trait. Pennington carved out a successful career despite physical limitations by reading defenses quickly and delivering the ball on time.
Mendoza, in Mangini’s view, shows similar tendencies. Those traits may not always jump off the screen, but they often translate to efficiency and consistency at the next level.
Pennington Blueprint Emerges for Mendoza’s NFL Development
While the physical comparison is notable, Mangini pointed out that the most important parallels go beyond mechanics. Pennington was widely respected in the locker room and known for his preparation and leadership. Those are the qualities Mangini believes Mendoza could bring to the next level.
“Chad was an excellent leader. He was well-respected and incredibly smart and disciplined. I think that’s what the Raiders are hoping they’re getting in Mendoza, where you know who knows how it’s going to go the first year, but it’s going to continue to get better based on his traits.”
That endorsement carries weight given Mangini’s history with Pennington. During their first season together in 2006, Pennington led the Jets to a 10-6 record and earned Comeback Player of the Year honors. It wasn’t his arm talent, but his command of the offense and his teammates’ trust.

For Mendoza, that sets a realistic blueprint. He may not dominate right away, especially if he lands with the Raiders. But quarterbacks with his profile often improve steadily as they gain experience and build chemistry within the system.
