The NFL season continues to deliver unwelcome surprises with injuries mounting across the league. As fantasy football managers assess the state of their rosters after Week 3, a major concern has emerged from Dallas. CeeDee Lamb suffered an injury that forced him to leave Sunday’s game against Chicago, creating immediate questions about his availability moving forward.

CeeDee Lamb Injury Update
Lamb left Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears with an apparent left leg injury in the first quarter at Soldier Field. The injury occurred when Lamb took a handoff from Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott and was looking to gain yardage upfield. When he got tackled by a Bears defender, it appeared that Lamb’s left ankle got caught under the defender’s leg.
The visual was concerning as Lamb’s ankle appeared to bend unnaturally during the tackle. He immediately headed to the blue tent on the Cowboys sideline before eventually making his way to the Dallas locker room for further evaluation.
Monday brought clarity on the diagnosis when NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Lamb is believed to have sustained a high ankle sprain. While the injury isn’t as severe as initially feared based on the concerning visual, high ankle sprains still present significant challenges for skill position players.

These injuries typically come with a 4-6 week recovery timeline, though the effects can linger and impact performance far beyond the initial healing period. High ankle sprains are notorious for affecting a player’s ability to make sharp cuts and explosive movements, which are crucial elements of Lamb’s game.
The timing couldn’t be worse for Dallas, as Lamb has been the engine of their passing attack. He was ranked as the third overall WR by PFSN’s Impact grade two seasons ago with a 94.2 rating and maintained an 86.3 grade through the first two weeks of 2025. Most remarkably, Lamb has accounted for 33.9% of the Cowboys’ receiving yards since the start of the 2023 season, the highest percentage of any player in the NFL over that span.
Monday Afternoon Update: Ed Werder reported that Lamb is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. Rapaport followed that up with a report that the Cowboys do not intend to place Lamb on IR, but that he will miss at least the next two games.
Lamb Fantasy Outlook
Lamb’s absence creates a massive void in one of the NFL’s most pass-heavy offenses. His importance to this Dallas attack cannot be overstated, as he has served as Prescott’s primary target and safety valve in virtually every offensive situation.
With Lamb sidelined, George Pickens will step up as the clear WR1 and moves into every-week must-start territory. The talented receiver has shown flashes of elite ability and should see a significant target increase in Lamb’s absence. Fantasy managers who roster Pickens should feel confident deploying him as a WR2 with upside for bigger performances.
The remaining receiving corps will need to shoulder additional responsibility. KaVontae Turpin and Jalen Tolbert will share the WR3 role behind Pickens, though neither represents a must-roster option for fantasy purposes. Turpin offers more desperation streamer appeal due to his big-play ability and return skills, but both players remain risky weekly starts given their inconsistent target shares.
Jake Ferguson will likely continue soaking up checkdown targets as Prescott looks for reliable underneath options. The tight end’s role could expand with Lamb unavailable. He is an every-week must-start TE1.
The Cowboys’ offensive identity may shift during Lamb’s absence, potentially becoming more run-heavy or relying on shorter passing concepts. This could limit the ceiling of all Dallas pass-catchers while they adjust to operating without their primary weapon.
