With the 2025 season being over for 18 of 32 NFL teams, the coaching carousel is underway. However, one coach who’s been speculated to be fired if they don’t perform in the playoffs is the Green Bay Packers’ Matt LaFleur.
Despite his uncertain future with the Packers, NFL insider Adam Schefter has dropped an update, painting a clearer picture of what’s to come for LaFleur.
Matt LaFleur and His Future With the Green Bay Packers
There have been rumors that LaFleur may be let go by the Packers, which has been strengthened by the fact that 2026 is the last year of his contract. This morning, Schefter appeared on the “Pat McAfee Show” to discuss LaFleur’s future.
“Can Ed Policy figure out a contract for Matt LaFleur..
If they can’t figure out a contract that works for both sides are they willing to let him go into the last year of his deal..
I believe they will try to sign him and Gutekunst to an extension” ~ @AdamSchefter #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/UImvUBTtAO

He said the following: “Can Ed Policy figure out a contract for Matt LaFleur.. If they can’t figure out a contract that works for both sides are they willing to let him go into the last year of his deal.. I believe they will try to sign him and Gutekunst to an extension.”
Despite the rumors of his termination, the man with the most inside information regarding the NFL (Schefter), believes that the Packers organization will not only resign LaFleur, but also general manager Brian Gutekunst. This season, the Packers finished with a 9-7-1 record behind LaFleur, which was good enough for second place in the NFC North and the seventh seed in the NFC playoff picture.
In PFSN’s OFFi, the Packers finished seventh in the league with an impact score of 80.5 and a grade of B-. In PFSN’s DEFi, the team ranks 16th with an impact score of 74.3 and a grade of C. In 2019, LaFleur joined the Packers as their new head coach, immediately propelling them to a 13-3 record. Overall, he has a head coaching record of 76-40-1 in 117 games, which translates to a win percentage of 65.4%. He only had one losing season, which was the team’s 8-9 record in 2022.
Despite his excellent regular-season record, the Packers have struggled in the playoffs. The team has played in eight playoff games during his tenure, winning three and losing five. His lack of playoff success is undoubtedly the primary driver of the rumors circulating about his potential firing.
Despite rumors, it appears that LaFleur will return and be signed to an extension by the Packers.
