Eagles Named as ‘Fun Fit’ for $39,000,000 WR to Unlock ‘More Upside’ After Super Bowl Triumph

Fresh off their Super Bowl triumph, the Philadelphia Eagles are already looking ahead to strengthening their roster for another championship push.

With questions surrounding their wide receiver depth and increasing buzz about a recently released pass-catcher who once signed a $39 million deal, the Eagles have emerged as a potential landing spot for a veteran who could add experience and upside to their offense. This move could prove crucial as the team aims to remain at the top of the league.

Could the Philadelphia Eagles Be the Ideal Landing Spot for Gabe Davis?

The wide receiver in question is Gabe Davis, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars just one year into a three-year, $39 million contract. The decision saddles the franchise with a significant dead cap hit for 2025, signaling the new front office’s willingness to move on from previous investments.

Davis’ contract, which included $24 million guaranteed, was negotiated under former general manager Trent Baalke. Now, with James Gladstone overseeing personnel decisions, the organization is shedding key signings from the previous regime.

“Davis arrived in Jacksonville under a previous regime,” wrote Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports. “With James Gladstone now running the front office, it appears the Jaguars are moving on from another Baalke carryover.”

Davis, 26, struggled during his lone season in Jacksonville. He played just 10 games before a torn meniscus in his left knee ended his campaign early. In that span, he managed only 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns, numbers that fell short of expectations for a player signed to elevate the offense.

Despite last season’s setbacks, Davis could still offer value to a team with established top receivers. His playoff experience and ability to contribute as a third option could make him an attractive addition for a contender like the Eagles.

“If Davis is prioritizing getting back on a playoff team, the Eagles would be a fun fit,” Sullivan wrote. “If Philly is looking for more upside from that spot [WR3], it could get it with Davis.”

With A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith locked in as the Eagles’ top wideouts, the WR3 spot remains open to competition. Currently, that role is held by Jahan Dotson, but his production in 2024 left much to be desired. In 16 games, Dotson recorded only 12 receptions for 122 yards and zero touchdowns for the Eagles.

The Eagles have a reputation for maximizing value in supporting roles, and Davis could fit the bill as a low-risk, high-reward option. His playoff experience, coupled with a change of scenery and fewer expectations, could reignite the potential that once earned him a major free agency payday. While no signing is imminent, the pairing would offer Davis a fresh start and the Eagles a chance to add even more firepower to their offense.
