Drake Maye Leads Patriots to First Super Bowl Berth Since 2018 After Improbable Turnaround

From longshot to Super Bowl bound the Patriots stun the NFL under Mike Vrabel now one win away from lifting the Lombardi Trophy

The New England Patriots defeated the Denver Broncos 10-7 in the AFC Championship game and will have the opportunity to play in Super Bowl LI. It wasn’t a pretty effort, but the Patriots played turnover-free football, which was good enough to surpass Denver.

From Long Odds to representing the AFC

Coming into the season, the New England Patriots weren’t even considered among contenders to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in February. Few around the league believed that number truly reflected a realistic outcome.

After a dominant regular season and a remarkable postseason run featuring victories over the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos, the Patriots now stand just one win away from reclaiming their place atop the NFL world.

A Defensive Battle Sets the Tone

The game was a defensive showdown in the first half, with the Patriots recording only 74 yards of offense in the first 30 minutes. Maye only mustered 41 passing yards and took three sacks in the first half against the best-ranked defense on PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric.

The Patriots set the tone in the second half with their first drive taking over nine minutes off the clock. However, that drive only resulted in a field goal for New England. The snow started coming down hard in the second half, leading to multiple missed field goals by Patriots kicker Andres Borregales.

Back Where They Belong

Throughout the 21st century, the New England Patriots have been one of the most successful franchises in professional sports. With 13 AFC Championship appearances and six Super Bowl titles, the organization established a dynasty that defined an era.

However, following years of postseason disappointment and an inability to advance past the Divisional Round, the Patriots had drifted from the standard they once set. That is no longer the case.

For the first time in six years, New England finds itself in familiar territory. Playing for a Lombardi Trophy.

Life after Tom Brady proved more difficult than expected. A revolving door at quarterback led to inconsistent results, including 7-9, 10-7, and 8-9 records, and eventually a brutal 4-13 stretch across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. After the conclusion of Jerod Mayo’s first year as head coach, the Patriots made a bold decision to move on and turn the franchise over to former player Mike Vrabel.

Vrabel Makes History

Vrabel became the seventh head coach to lead the team he played for to a Super Bowl berth. In addition, he became the eighth head coach to lead his team to the Super Bowl in his first season. The last coach to accomplish that mark was Gary Kubiak with the Denver Broncos in 2015.

Vrabel engineered a complete culture shift, restoring discipline and belief within the locker room. The Patriots recorded a 14-3 record, their best regular season finish since their season in 2016, which ended with a Super Bowl victory.

One Win Away

Now, New England stands on the brink of history once again. Written off in August and then doubted in the fall, the Patriots have completed one of the most improbable turnarounds in recent NFL memory.

New England will await the winner of Sunday night’s massive matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks.
