The NFL world was shocked in Week 16, when the CBS broadcast during the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions game returned from commercial showing a clip of Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf involved in an altercation with a fan along the front row of the stands.
After a long week, Metcalf was suspended for the final two games of the season. He appealed, and the suspension was upheld, ending his season unless the Steelers can clinch a playoff berth. While Metcalf is set to miss out on a significant amount of money, one NFL insider shared what Pittsburgh has decided regarding his contract guarantees.
NFL Insider Shares Latest News on Pittsburgh Steelers WR DK Metcalf’s Suspension Fallout
Despite being caught by the broadcast, Metcalf was not pulled from the Week 16 game and finished the Steelers’ 29-24 victory over the Lions with four catches for 42 yards. However, the NFL announced during the game that they would be investigating the incident, eventually deciding to suspend Metcalf for the final two games of the season.
Metcalf will end up forfeiting $555,556 in salary for missing those two games, and the suspension was initially supposed to void the $45 million in future guaranteed money according to his contract.
However, before kickoff, Fox NFL Sunday’s Jay Glazer reported that Pittsburgh declined to void Metcalf’s guaranteed money, leaving it intact. That’s a nice gesture from the franchise, following the signing of the veteran to a long-term contract last offseason.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about the incident on Tuesday, December 23, and told the media that he had spoken with Metcalf about it. He said, “He did explain to me why he did what he did. And I certainly don’t condone the behavior, but I support DK. And I really don’t have a lot to add other than what I just told you.”
Pittsburgh’s offense has been a middle-of-the-road unit in 2025. While expectations were high after the team added quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Metcalf in the offseason, everything hasn’t quite clicked into place. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact metric, the Steelers rank 15th in the NFL with a score of 76.9.
As for Metcalf, he’s had a solid season for the Steelers. In 15 games, he caught 59 of 99 receptions for 850 yards and six touchdowns. His yardage total was the lowest of his career, but the limitations of Rodgers were clearly a factor this season. He’s the 23rd-ranked WR in PFSN’s WR Impact metric with a score of 80.1.
