Dianna Russini became the subject of one of the biggest controversies of the entire summer. After her alleged affair with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was exposed, the storyline took over the internet.
Both personalities had to deal with severe consequences, with the veteran reporter even stepping down from her role at The Athletic. Now, as the start of the 2026 NFL season draws closer, the rumor mill is churning about a potential comeback.
Dianna Russini Might Be Back Soon
After pictures of the two leaked from a resort in Arizona, showcasing them holding hands, hugging, and lounging by the poolside, it didn’t take long for people to connect the dots. Thereafter, Russini stepped down from her role, and Vrabel entered counseling.
Missing the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft as a result, he also admitted to some tough conversations with the Patriots organization and his family. Since then, Vrabel’s focus has turned to the upcoming season as he prepares the team to build on last season’s Super Bowl run.
Russini, on the other hand, has been away from the public spotlight, shying away from media appearances. But that disappearance might not be for much longer. Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy confirmed that a potential return, albeit in a different role, could be in the works.

“It’s looking like Dianna Russini’s comeback is not a matter of if, but when,” McCarthy wrote. “Will the former senior NFL reporter for The Athletic come back in her former guise as an insider? Maybe.”
However, he had another potential avenue in mind for the veteran reporter.

“My guess is the entertaining Jersey native joins the brash Barstool Sports as more of a personality than a reporter,” McCarthy said.
He also pointed to Michael Silver, who worked with Russini at The Athletic, as one of those who would work with her. As evidence, he revealed a clip of Silver himself from his appearance on “The Tom Tolbert Show.”
“I do think she’s going to be back, probably not as an insider, at least in the short term,” Silver said. “But I think she’ll be back in this realm, probably talking about football and other things pretty soon.”
It remains to be seen what that comeback looks like or where it originates from. But after being AWOL for the better part of six months, the NFL media landscape could once again be shaken by Russini in a major way.
