The past few weeks have not been easy for New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. He became involved in a scandal with journalist Dianna Russini, who revealed an alleged affair between the two, shaking the NFL world during Draft week and even leading to Russini’s departure from The Athletic.
Naturally, the story became a major topic on social media, generating memes and theories, with the internet digging through both of their personal lives looking for clues about the situation. Recently, however, Vrabel was approached in public by someone who followed him and questioned him about the matter, drawing outrage from many people.
NFL World Reacts to Mike Vrabel’s Interaction With TMZ Reporter
No fan expects to see their head coach’s personal life become a media storyline, especially after a successful season that ended in a Super Bowl loss but still exceeded expectations on the field.
The atmosphere around the Patriots, which had been built on hope and progress, is now one of uncertainty.
But beyond the personal controversy, Vrabel has become a target of harassment from people seeking more details about the story, and that became clear in an incident involving TMZ, a media outlet known for breaking celebrity stories but also for controversies over the limits of certain coverage.
Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports and a passionate Patriots fan, showed his outrage on social media, saying the outlet was desperate because another source broke the story first, calling the act “disgusting journalism.”
“What the f*ck! Who hired this guy? The Jets? This isn’t watergate. Give me a break. This is harassment, plain and simple! TMZ trying to make up for the fact they got scooped by Page 6! This is disgusting journalism. I’m sick. Not American!”

Dave Kluge also spoke out, arguing that Vrabel had already addressed the situation publicly multiple times and deserved space to handle things privately with his family.
“Mike Vrabel has made multiple statements publicly. I’m sure he and his family are dealing with it behind closed doors. This ain’t it. People need to learn boundaries and feel shame again,” he posted.

The overwhelming majority of reactions defended Vrabel and condemned TMZ’s actions after the outlet reportedly followed him from the airport to the location of his rental car, leaving the coach visibly irritated and uncomfortable.
Graham Coffey highlighted this detail and admitted that it went way over the line.
He wrote, “Following him to the rental car is insane. This is an NFL coach who has met with the media since the scandal broke. The organization has told the media what he’s doing. There are some uncomfortable questions that need to be asked, but he didn’t commit a crime. This is too much.”

Vrabel still remained calm, gave short answers, and continued on his way without any major confrontation with the outlet.
But deep down, as Jeremy Branham noted, “You know Vrabel wanted to Kill him,” the Pats HC certainly wasn’t up for any of that!
Nonetheless, Vrabel’s approach has been to say as little as possible publicly and try to handle the matter internally, even stepping away from the franchise’s final day of the draft to seek help.

While he received support from most people, there were also those who believed Vrabel deserved this kind of treatment, arguing that, as a public figure, he had allegedly committed infidelity with another public figure.

“Don’t cheat on your wife with that platform and you won’t have to deal with this. No sympathy for him,” one X account posted.
This story appears far from over and could affect the Patriots’ preparation for the season. Russini has stepped away indefinitely from social media while dealing with the fallout, in what has already become one of the biggest recent controversies involving NFL personalities.
