Big Cat Believes Dianna Russini Isn’t Done in Sports Media

Speaking candidly, Katz didn’t exactly defend Russini, but he didn’t bury her either. Instead, he framed her situation in a way that reflects the modern media landscape, where traditional paths are no longer the only routes to relevance.

“I don’t know if I wouldn’t hire her,” said Big Cat. “I don’t know if she’d want to work with us because we’ve made some jokes and I totally understand [that], but we have to make the jokes that we make. It sucks that she had to leave her job. I think a lot of it was her own doing, but we’re in a time now where you can be independent.”

His comments arrived at a moment when Russini’s resignation from The Athletic was still fresh. She stepped down from her role following the fallout from photos linking her to Vrabel, choosing to walk away from her duties.

The decision, she later explained, was about control, about not letting the narrative consume her entire professional identity. However, Katz leaned into that same idea of autonomy, pointing toward the growing ecosystem of independent media.

“She can start a Substack,” he added. “She can start her own podcast. And if you are someone who has an audience or can break news, people will follow that, so there is a second act somewhere for her. I don’t know what exactly it looks like. There’s just too many avenues that people can take, especially the independent route, and make a good living in the sports world that I would be shocked if that was it for her.”

The backdrop to all of this remains complicated. Reports, including insights from Pablo Torre, suggested that Russini and Vrabel’s dynamic was well know within NFL circles long before the public ever saw a headline.

Still, the consequences have been immediate. Russini’s departure from The Athletic marked a sharp turn in a career built across major platforms, including ESPN. Her public statement insisted that she stood by her work while rejecting the narrative forming around her.

“I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published,” she wrote.

“I have decided to step aside now,” Russini added. “I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.”

Russini’s immediate future might be uncertain, clouded by public backlash and industry hesitation.

But she’s one of the most notable sports reporters in the business and she’s now a household name, so it remains to be seen what her next chapter will look like.
