Dianna Russini’s Resignation Gets Questioned After Abrupt Exit From The Athletic

Russini, who joined The Athletic in 2023 after a long tenure at ESPN, confirmed her decision in a formal letter addressed to executive editor Steven Ginsberg. In the statement, she emphasized that her resignation was made with careful consideration, while also defending her professional track record.

“I have come to this decision with deep sadness but with clarity about what is right for me, my family, and the work I have spent my career building,” Russini said in the letter. “You and I have already publicly addressed the recent attacks against me, and I have nothing to add publicly to what we have said. I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published.”

In a follow-up portion of the letter, Russini addressed the media frenzy that developed after the photos were published, suggesting that the narrative surrounding the situation had spiraled beyond the facts.

“When the Page Six item first appeared, The Athletic supported me unequivocally, expressed confidence in my work and pride in my journalism,” Russini noted. “For that I am grateful. In the days that followed, unfortunately, commentators in various media have engaged in self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts. Moreover, this media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete.

“I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career,” Russini continued.

The controversy began when images published by the New York Post showed Russini and Vrabel together at a resort in Arizona, including shots of them hugging, holding hands, and hanging out by the pool.

Shortly after, The Athletic launched an internal investigation and removed Russini from her reporting duties in the meantime. Russini’s resignation letter drew sweet and, in some cases, critical reactions from the broader NFL community, particularly on social media.

“If we’re just being honest this explanation really makes zero sense,” Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports posted on X. “I don’t think anybody should lose their job over alleged canoodling but this statement makes it seem like there was definitely canoodling happening. An innocent canoodler would prob welcome a thorough investigation to prove their innocence and exonerate themselves right? This screams guilty canoodler to me.”

Portnoy also shared a GIF that reads, “You can’t fire me, I quit.”

“So Dianna Russini is blaming everyone else for her stepping down at The Athletic? Did I read this right?” Matt Infante of PFSN wrote on X.

Additional reactions ranged from curiosity to surprise, highlighting just how quickly the story has captured public attention.

Bryan Cameron of Philly Sports Network also shared a GIF on X to share his reaction.

YouTuber Brandon Carney noted on X: “Oh my god” with a crying emoji.

“Still have yet to see a major news outlet report on it… wonder why,” one influencer posted on X.

NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently explained why he hasn’t been willing to cover the Russini and Vrabel story.

“Finally, I don’t want to sit here and pretend I didn’t see the stories that came out last week about Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini. I’ve known both for a long time. I like and respect both, and they’re both great at their jobs,” he wrote.

“I don’t have anything more to add other than I really feel for the family members involved who are going through it. And that this is way more of a media story than a football story, and, honestly, I’ve never seen it as part of my job to cover other sports media.”

As the situation continues to unfold, Russini’s resignation marks an important moment in NFL media circles. It will be interesting to see what she does next after confirming her departure from The Athletic.
