It has been among the wildest offseasons in recent memory for the San Francisco 49ers. From the Brandon Aiyuk situation to head coach Kyle Shanahan getting in an accident, to owner Jed York getting arrested, things have progressively turned up a notch.
Now, another controversy has caught everyone’s attention as two men, one of whom, Daejon Love, posed as a player on the team, led a major scam. It instantly caught the headlines, but it has also allowed others to poke fun at the entire incident.
Daejon Love Becomes an Instant Meme
Love and Taylor Jamie Chan, aged 35 and 18, respectively, were the ones who tried to run the scam, defrauding more than two dozen women out of over $1.3 million. They were officially charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud.
Running the scam for over four years, Love created fake personas on dating apps, presenting himself as a member of the 49ers. Posing Chan as his financial advisor, the two got multiple women to lend Love large sums of money.
Eventually, he would cut off all communication with them, as the FBI identified 26 victims of his schemes, though they estimate there are many more who fell prey to his efforts. The entire story has been a wild ride from start to finish, but it has now become a comical situation.

The Cleveland Guardians of the MLB were among those who took immense joy out of the entire movement. Revealing their starting lineup, they captioned the image, “Grind don’t stop.” However, alongside the lineup, they added a picture of the aforementioned Love.
Many immediately took note of it, and the jokes started flying in. Pete Blackburn of the “What Chaos” show was among those who were impressed by the Guardians’ dedication, claiming, “Unreal work here.”

Emmy Award-winning Reggie Chatman Jr. was left stunned by the image, exclaiming, “There’s no way.”

Some, though, believed that the image would give Love another avenue to exploit the scam further: “Daejon Love is going to use this tweet and image as proof he’s on the Cleveland Guardians and scam even more people,” he claimed.

Others were starting to run with the joke and even bow down to the greatness of the fictitious Love, as RedditCFB’s account wrote, “Daejon Love is the first major 2-sport athlete since Deion Sanders.”

Even though a section of the internet had turned it into a laughing matter, the allegations and consequences for Love were extreme.
Arrested in Boise, it remains to be seen what the case against him leads to.
