In free agency, the Washington Commanders have focused many of their efforts on upgrading the defense so that what happened last season can not happen again. Rightfully so, this needed to be a focus for the team, but the Commanders have also been in the receiver market.
The only issue is that the Commanders have not signed a WR, but they did just add a talented receiving weapon in tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo.
Washington Commanders Add Dynamic TE Chigoziem Okonkwo to the Roster
Last season, the Commanders finished 5-12; the defense was abysmal (ranked No. 30 in PFSN’s Defensive Impact Metric), and the offense was actually fine, but star quarterback Jayden Daniels was out for much of the season. The issue with the offense this offseason is that WR Deebo Samuel and TE Zach Ertz are no longer on the roster because their contracts expired.
Washington needed to add more talent to the passing attack, especially with Daniels returning from injury and trying to get back to his rookie-year success. So, in free agency, the Commanders have reached an agreement with the former Tennessee Titans TE, Okonkwo.

This is a big move by the Commanders, and for Okonkwo, it’s a really good contract: a 3-year, $27M deal.
Last season, Okonkwo was ranked No. 33 in PFSN’s TE Impact Metric, but when he made plays, it turned some games around. Also, his usage hasn’t been super high in the Titans’ offense, but he’s still grabbed 8 touchdowns in his 4-year career.

Okonkwo is going to be a big-time player for the Commanders, and Daniels could have a new favorite weapon to throw to. Also, with how many injuries the Commanders dealt with last season, Okonkwo should bring some stability.
The 26-year-old tight end has not missed a single game in his NFL career. Maybe that can be attributed to not being used enough in the offense, but not missing a game is still definitely something to praise, and the Commanders will love to have him available on the field at all times.
