Colts QB Depth Chart: Who Will Start if Riley Leonard Can’t Play After Daniel Jones, Anthony Richardson Sr.’s Injuries?

The Colts are now dealing with injuries to Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard, prompting questions as to who their QB will be in Week 15.

The Indianapolis Colts began the season 7-1, and in addition to losing four of their last five, Daniel Jones is not only out for the season with an Achilles injury, but Riley Leonard, the player who replaced Jones, could also miss Week 15.

So, if Jones is out, along with Leonard and with Anthony Richardson still on injured reserve, who will be the Colts’ quarterback against the Seattle Seahawks?

The Colts’ Season Has Imploded With the Top Three QBs Injured

The Colts’ injuries to the quarterback position began in October, when Anthony Richardson, their backup quarterback, suffered a broken orbital bone during warmups using elastic resistance bands.

Then, a few weeks back, it was revealed that Jones has a fracture in his left fibula, but he would continue to play.

Then, in Week 14, Jones suffered the dreadful Achilles injury and is now out for the season. After leaving the game injured against the Jaguars, Leonard — the sixth-round rookie out of Duke and Notre Dame — stepped in and went 18-of-29 for 145 yards, one interception, and added five yards and a rushing touchdown.

The Colts lost the game 36-19 and fell to 8-5 on the season. Now, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has revealed that Leonard is injured.

“Colts QB Riley Leonard also is dealing with a knee injury that leaves his status for Sunday’s game at Seattle uncertain,” Schefter wrote.

So, fair question: If Jones, Richardson, and Leonard are all out, who will be the Colts’ starting quarterback?

To answer that, we’ll have to turn to the Colts’ practice squad and quarterback Brett Rypien.

Rypien entered the NFL in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Boise State. He’s played for the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Rams, Seahawks, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, and now the Colts.

Over his career, he’s started four games, going 2-2. In those starts, Rypien completed 77 of 131 passes (58.8%) for 794 yards, three touchdown passes, and six interceptions.
Now, he’ll inherit an offense that Jones and company led to a grade of 88.9 (2nd) in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric.

As a result of Jones’ injury and the recent losses, the Colts have dropped from No. 4 to No. 16 in the latest PFSN Power Rankings.

We’ll see if Leonard can go. If not, be prepared for Rypien to start for the Colts at the Seahawks.
