The Kansas City Chiefs came crashing back down to reality last season after making three straight Super Bowls, winning two of them. Not only did they not make the Super Bowl, but they also missed the playoffs entirely, and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL. Now, they’ve focused on retooling to get back in contention while Mahomes rehabs.
Former New England Patriots defensive back Jason McCourty emphasized that getting another receiver and reuniting Mahomes with Tyreek Hill could be a solution that helps both sides.
Jason McCourty Makes the Case for a Potential Tyreek Hill Reunion in Kansas City
The Chiefs’ offense looked a lot like hero ball in 2025. The injuries to receivers and the suspension of Rashee Rice left them shorthanded at times, forcing Mahomes to play the savior role quite often.
According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, they posted an impact score of 74.3 last season, ranking 17th in the league. A bottom-half offense, although barely, is astonishing for a team with Mahomes at quarterback and future Hall of Famer Travis Kelce.
There are still questions at receiver for Kansas City, as Rice is dealing with legal issues. Even outside of Rice, it’s not the strongest group. Therefore, McCourty argued on the “Up & Adams Show” that it makes sense to explore a reunion with Hill.
“It seems like it makes a lot of sense for Tyreek Hill to end up back in Kansas City,” McCourty said. “Rashee Rice [is] in jail right now. Offseason things don’t look perfect for them going on. They don’t have a ton outside of Xavier Worthy and then, Tyquan Thornton, so they’re gonna need other weapons in that wide receiver room.”
The Chiefs have set high standards for themselves and won’t settle for anything other than competing for the Lombardi Trophy each year. Last year, they weren’t close to good enough, and right now, their offensive weapons look bleak.
At least their run game should get a huge boost with reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III signing for the next three seasons. Even with that, a receiver add looks to be necessary, and Hill could be the answer.
Hill is coming off a gruesome season-ending injury that he suffered in prime time against the New York Jets in 2025. With the 32-year-old wideout aging and seemingly past his prime, it is a risk to bring in an older player coming off an injury like his. McCourty evaluated the risk and raised questions surrounding where he’ll be come the start of the season.

Although Keenan Allen was with the Los Angeles Chargers for years, McCourty threw out the idea of potentially adding him. If the Chiefs did bring in Allen, it would be quite shocking given the rivalry in the AFC West.
Hill makes the most sense of the veteran receivers because of his history with the Chiefs and the system under Andy Reid. But the questions surrounding him could be why the Chiefs end up looking elsewhere. If Hill is healthy, he will almost certainly find a home, whether it’s with KC or elsewhere.
