The Kansas City Chiefs’ efforts to rebuild from a disastrous 2025 campaign have been hampered by wide receiver Rashee Rice’s unpredictable off-field behavior. From positive drug tests to prison sentences, the 26-year-old has proven to be unreliable. As such, an NFL insider recently suggested that the Chiefs could target two veteran receivers to add to their team.
Chiefs Urged To Explore Options Amid Uncertainty Around Rashee Rice’s Future
On the field, Rice is on a trajectory that could very well see him become one of the top-paid receivers in the NFL someday. In 28 games, he has recorded 156 receptions for 1,797 yards and 14 touchdowns. As a dangerous dplaymaker, he played a key role in the Chiefs’ 2023 Super Bowl run, which resulted in an 88.6 PFSN WR Impact score that year.
However, his off-field behavior is starting to overshadow his NFL accomplishments. A positive marijuana test result, a hit-and-run case, and a prison sentence — Rice’s football career is already on the brink of collapse.
“The Chiefs can’t trust Rashee Rice,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote. “The drug test Rice failed wasn’t a drug test. It was an intelligence test. Rice knew the tests were coming. He knew what was on the line. Now he must deal with the fallout. This isn’t, to be clear, about the marijuana he tested positive for. It’s about the reputation he had coming out of college at SMU, and the 2025 hit-and-run that landed him the 30-day sentence the positive drug test triggered in the first place.”
Rice has struggled to stay on the right path when he’s not on the field, and there are a lot of questions about whether he’ll ever be able to truly turn the corner. The infamous case of former wide receiver Antonio Brown stands as a warning about players who lack self-discipline.
“It’s about [Rice] allegedly punching a photographer less than two months later, and how he has slipped up again — regardless of how it went down or what it was for,” Breer added. “He knew he had to walk the straight and narrow, yet somehow, here we are again… It’s a shame, too… the Chiefs view Rice as capable of being a top-five or top-10 receiver… [If he gets there], we’re probably talking about the Chiefs paying Rice somewhere around $30 million per year.”
Kansas City now has to weigh a difficult situation, including pursuing wide receiver depth in case Rice faces a suspension or other disciplinary action.

“Maybe [KC should] look for some veteran insurance at receiver so they’re ready for the chance of a suspension (that wouldn’t be about the weed, either, but violating his probation),” Breer concluded. “Maybe that’s Stefon Diggs. Maybe it’s circling back on A.J. Brown. Regardless, it’s fine for the Chiefs to hope for Rice to make it back, and obviously they do. They just can’t count on Rice anymore.”
Diggs and Brown both stand as strong receiver assets. With experience of playing in Super Bowls and a combined 18 years of NFL experience, the Chiefs will undoubtedly benefit from having either of the two.
