Carolina Panthers’ lead back is missing Week 5 with a calf injury that surfaced during the New England Patriots’ loss. The Panthers ruled him out after he skipped all three practices this week, but coach Dave Canales called it a day-to-day situation that shouldn’t keep him out long. Rico Dowdle steps into the starting role.
How Did Chuba Hubbard Get Injured?
The calf issue first surfaced ahead of Week 4 against New England, per PFSN. Hubbard was added to the injury report on Thursday and limited in practice on Thursday and Friday before the Patriots game. His workload dropped noticeably during the 42-13 loss in Foxborough.
He logged just 10 carries for 49 yards and saw his snap share fall to 51%, well below the 60%-plus he’d been hitting in Weeks 1 through 3.
The Panthers gave him extra rest and treatment this week, hoping he’d bounce back. He didn’t practice on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, and the team officially ruled him out on Friday ahead of Sunday’s matchup with Miami.
The Panthers listed Hubbard among four players ruled out on their final injury report. Rico Dowdle will start in his place, with rookie Trevor Etienne next in line for touches.
When Will Chuba Hubbard Return?
The Panthers haven’t mentioned injured reserve and are treating this as week-to-week. Canales said the staff couldn’t get Hubbard ready quickly enough for Week 5 but plans to re-evaluate him soon.
“We just couldn’t get Chuba around quickly enough to put him out there… We’ll keep working on him and take another look at him early next week.”
Hubbard had been productive before the injury surfaced. He posted steady numbers in Weeks 1 through 3, rushing for 57 yards against Jacksonville, 38 at Arizona, and 73 versus Atlanta. He also caught two touchdown passes in those first two games, giving him early-season scoring production through the air.
His return to practice will be the key indicator. Carolina hosts Miami on Sunday and the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6. Some projections suggest a two-week absence, but the team hasn’t ruled him out beyond this week.
The timing hurts Carolina’s struggling offense. Hubbard ranked 16th among running backs in PFSN’s RB Impact Score through four games, posting a C+ grade with a 78.2 impact score. He’d been the workhorse with 53 carries for 217 yards and two receiving touchdowns, averaging 16.5 touches per game.
The Panthers sit 1-3 with the league’s 25th-ranked offense in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric, earning a D+ grade. Dowdle takes over as the lead back, but getting Hubbard healthy remains critical for a team trying to salvage its early-season struggles.
