The Seattle Seahawks took care of an important piece of business on Saturday. They signed star cornerback Devon Witherspoon to a new contract extension. Witherspoon signed a four-year contract worth $132 million, which includes $101 million guaranteed.
Witherspoon is now the highest-paid corner in NFL history, and it’s been an incredible 2026 for the former fifth overall pick. First, he won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks back in February, and now he has provided generational wealth for his family.
Signings of this magnitude always get people talking. That is certainly no different with this one. Reactions from across the NFL landscape poured in once news of this move broke on social media.

The main sentiment around the deal itself is that Witherspoon earned every penny. He is seen as one of the premier cornerbacks in the game. And he deserved to have a contract that reflected that.

However, none of these moves exist in a vacuum. There is always some sort of knock-down effect that can change how negotiations with another player and team pan out. For instance, the Detroit Lions paid Jahmyr Gibbs very shortly after the Atlanta Falcons first inked Bijan Robinson this offseason.

This is true for Witherspoon as well. He was not the only star-level corner in need of a new deal. New England Patriots star Christian Gonzalez is also up for an extension. And a lot of the reactions to the Witherspoon news focused heavily on Gonzalez’s potential next contract.

Patriots reporter Mike Reiss said that Witherspoon’s extension “sets the benchmark for potential Christian Gonzalez/Patriots deal.”

By and large, this is a significant deal for the Seahawks. Witherspoon is now locked down for the foreseeable future. And this move keeps one of the brightest young stars in the NFL on the team that not only drafted him but won a Super Bowl with him.
Witherspoon finished the 2025 season with a 74.9 CB impact rating, according to PFN’s in-house metric. He recorded 72 total combined tackles, seven passes defended, and one interception in the regular season. In the playoffs, he recorded 17 tackles and a sack as Seattle won the Super Bowl.
The Seahawks are certainly trying to win another championship in 2026. Having Witherspoon around will only increase their chances of defending their ring. Seattle begins its Super Bowl defense on September 9 against the New England Patriots in the curtain-raiser to the 2026 NFL season.
