Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba React to Rashid Shaheed’s Trade to Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks made one of the most talked-about moves of the 2025 NFL trade deadline, acquiring Rashid Shaheed from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for fourth- and fifth-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, per multiple reports.

At 6-2, Seattle has emerged as one of the league’s top success stories this season. Led by a rejuvenated field general, Sam Darnold, and offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, the Seahawks are squarely in the NFC West race and clearly operating as buyers. Meanwhile, the 1-8 Saints have pivoted toward rebuilding, parting ways with key players for future draft capital.

Chris Olave Sends Six-Word Message on Rashid Shaheed Trade

The move reunites Shaheed with Kubiak, who served as his offensive coordinator in New Orleans, ensuring a smoother transition into the Seahawks’ offensive scheme.

While the trade made waves around the league, it also drew reactions from players closely tied to both sides. Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, one of the breakout stars of 2025, reacted to the news on social media with an eye emoji.

Shortly after, Chris Olave, Smith-Njigba’s former Ohio State teammate and Shaheed’s now-former Saints teammate, shared a six-word heartfelt message in response. “You got a great one, bro,” Olave responded to Smith-Njigba.

Olave’s six-word message carried dual meaning, both as a nod to Shaheed’s talent and a show of support for Smith-Njigba’s strengthening offense in Seattle. The two Buckeyes share a deep bond, and Olave’s endorsement underscores how highly Shaheed is regarded inside locker rooms around the league.

Olave himself has been linked to trade rumors amid New Orleans’ reset, but the Saints have made clear their intent to build around him. Shaheed, however, was always a more likely candidate to move, given his expiring contract and the team’s long-term priorities.

What Rashid Shaheed Brings to Seattle Alongside Star WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba

Shaheed, a former undrafted gem out of Weber State, has been one of New Orleans’ few bright spots this year. Despite the team’s struggles, he’s logged 44 receptions for 499 yards and two touchdowns through nine games while also contributing as a return specialist. In 2023, he earned Pro Bowl honors as a returner and AP All-Pro recognition as a kick returner.

According to PFSN’s Wide Receiver Impact (WRi) metrics, Shaheed currently holds a WR Impact Score of 76.6, ranking 36th in the NFL. He’s logged 66 targets (15th), 44 receptions (16th), and 499 receiving yards (21st), averaging 7.6 yards per target (43rd). His catch rate sits 6.3% above expectation, though his yards after catch rank slightly below average at -0.56 over expectation (58th).

These numbers paint a picture of a consistent and reliable receiver, one who can stretch defenses vertically and thrive in the right system.

The 27-year-old speedster, now in the final year of his $5.2 million deal, gives Seattle both an explosive receiving threat and much-needed depth in a wideout room ravaged by injuries.

Meanwhile, Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been on a completely different level statistically. Per the same PFSN metrics, he leads the NFL with a WR Impact Score of 98.7, ranking No. 1 overall. Through eight games, Smith-Njigba has 79 targets (3rd), 58 receptions (4th), and a league-leading 948 yards, with four touchdowns (14th). His efficiency metrics are elite, posting 12.0 yards per target (2nd) and a catch rate 15.5% above expectation (8th).

Adding Shaheed gives Smith-Njigba another burner alongside him, freeing him up to exploit more one-on-one matchups and maintain his historic pace.

Seattle’s Playoff Push Just Got Stronger

The trade clearly signals Seattle’s all-in mindset. While some critics believe the Seahawks may have overpaid with two mid-round picks, others view the move as a calculated effort to secure playoff positioning.

Shaheed’s explosive speed and return skills could be the final spark the Seahawks need as they battle the Los Angeles Rams for NFC West supremacy, and also the Cardinals in the upcoming fixtures. For the Saints, the deal adds flexibility and assets for their rebuild while giving Shaheed a chance to shine on a contending roster.
