Surprisingly, the Kansas City Chiefs have struggled to start the 2025 season, sitting at 1-2 after three weeks. What’s most surprising about their slow start is that it comes from offensive struggles, which is unexpected from a unit led by Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes is not entirely to blame, as Kansas City’s rushing attack has been one of the league’s worst. With production lacking in the running game, the Chiefs were recently predicted to trade for a running back with 42 career touchdowns to bring some juice to the offense.
Chiefs Predicted to Trade for 42-TD Running Back to Strengthen Offense
When Mahomes is the Chiefs’ leading rusher through three weeks, it’s a clear sign the running back room needs an upgrade.
Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt lead the Chiefs’ backfield, but they’ve combined for just 173 total yards through three games. Hunt holds a PFSN RBi grade of 72.8, ranking 28th in the league, while Pacheco’s grade is 70.8, the 32nd best.
The team could use an infusion of talent at the position, and PFSN’s Josh Weil recently listed Kansas City as a potential trade suitor for Raheem Mostert, who currently plays for the Las Vegas Raiders.
As Weil notes, Mostert has yet to record a carry for Las Vegas in 2025, making him an expendable piece for the Raiders and a cheap acquisition for the Chiefs. The veteran running back would likely only cost a late-day three pick and is on a very affordable $1.6 million contract.
Mostert is in his 11th season in the league, but didn’t have more than 30 carries in a season until 2018, when he was 26 years old. He’s totaled 4,690 scrimmage yards and 42 total touchdowns in his career.
His best season came in 2023, at the age of 31, when he rushed for 1,012 yards and 18 touchdowns with the Miami Dolphins. While he’s now 33, on the older side for a running back, he’s only had over 100 carries in a season four times, so it’s reasonable to think he still has some tread on his tires in 2025.
If Mostert can add any spark to Kansas City’s rushing attack, it would be a worthwhile move, given just how poor their running backs have been this season.
While the Raiders and Chiefs are AFC West rivals and don’t typically make trades, this could be a rare exception. The Raiders would likely be happy to get any value for Mostert, and the Chiefs would probably be willing to offer a pick to acquire a player who could help improve their ground game.
